Hello Kim, the only "true" Spur Thigh Tortoise is the Mediterranean Spur Thigh, or Testudo Graeca Ibera. The Sulcata Tortoise is sometimes called an African Spur Thigh Tortoise, but that is completely incorrect since the correct translation of their latin name; Geochelone Sulcata is obvious. I hope that this helps you out. By the way, how big is your Sulcata? I can send you some plans for various types of enclosures, but I would need to know the size of your Tortoise first.
Take care, Johnny.

Ok Can you tell what type he is? I know they are bad photos but maybe also I was wondering about the divit in his back end is this for breeding puropses? It is not as deep as it looks the light was just the right way that it looks deep.
Any info would be great thanks.
Kim

Hello Kim, that is definitely a beautiful and healthy little Sulcata Tortoise that you have there!!! The divot on his rear end is called its' 6th Vertebral Scute and it is completely normal for it to look like that in Sulcata's. As your Tortoise grows, its' Marginal Scutes will develop into a large flare around the sides and rear of it's carapace, but the 6th Vertebral Scute will continue to grow down and will hook under the plastron a little. You Tortoise still looks like it is quite young, so you won't be able to determine the sex of it for a few more years. At that size, your Tortoise would be comfortable in a 2 foot by 3 foot or 2 foot by 4 foot enclosure. I can send you some plans if it would help, or I can refer you to a couple of sites that have plans online. Please let me know what you would like to do.
Take care and Happy Holidays, Johnny.
