Gaboon bite......
My 5 foot+ female latched on to my 4 ft+ male last night....... Grabbed him by the face as he was finishing a rat...... What a bloody mess....... The males face swelled up alot right after the bite but today is back down to normal size and he seems to be doing fine....... No iregular breathing and no more bleeding......... She hit him so hard and fast it was just amazing to see..... But I dont want to see it again....... Apparently gaboons are immune to their venom....... She did not get any vital organs so I am sure he will be fine......... The male is drinking alot of water though...... Seen his head in the dish about 4 times today...... In all my years of keeping gaboons this is the first time I have ever seen one attack another........ I was sick after watching that...... There was nothing I could do to help the male...... I just had to let it go on till the female realized he was not food........ I treated the two punctures with neosporin and have him in a separate cage for now........ I just want to monitor him for a while to make sure he does not get infected.......

I bet it was tough to see that, its times like that that make you feel helpless. Glad he is OK. I do not know about being imune to there own venom though, I had a B. arietans that bit itself during feeding and 8 hours later when I returned home you could pour his insides out his mouth. Very nasty and of course I felt bad as he!! but what could you do.

I dont know how else to explain it....... If it was not imune why is he still alive????? If it was me or you that was bitten like that we would be dead already without treatment..... I cant see it being a dry bite beacause it was clearly a feed responce........ Plus I saw venom on his face...... He is acting normaly as always....... They must have an immunity to their own venom composition...... Which in this case is a good thing......... I realy thought I was going to wake up to a dead gaboon viper this morning....... This pair produces the most beautiful neonates I have ever seen....... I am glad he is fine......

A perfect reason why not to feed with more than one snake in an enclosure.

gregg, sorry to hear that man, sounds like he is going to be ok
i was always under the impression that they were immune to their own venom, but im not sure, maybe thats incorrect.
at any rate, hope the male make a full recovery for you!

Thanks Matt,
Only time wil tell I guess..... Alittle under 48 hours later an he is still ok....... Do you think any of us would have survived this long without AV??? I will have to check the wound again this afternoon...... What a daunting task having to deal with those 8 foot fangs(well they seem that long when you are holding a gaboon by the head)....... I will just log this entire event and will keep you all posted........ What better way to learn a leson than by someone elses mistake..... Thanks for the words fellas.......

Ouch! Poor thing! Good luck with him, i'm sure he'll be ok.
You feed your hots in the same cage as their mates?

Easy way to administer Neosporin to a hot is with a Q-Tip covered in it taped to the end of a hook

I use a broken fishing rod and a pair of lady's eyebrow tweasers with a ball of cotton wool. Put the wool in the tweasres and push them into the broken rod(down the hole in the centre) as you push them in they tighten up
works great and gives you the room you need with tipans and it gives a good dose as well'

They are immune to there own venom and I am 100% sure on that think of its this way your snake weights what? a couple of pounds? a man weights at least 160+ pounds so efectively your snake got 80 times the venom that would kill the average man.....
