Question Houseing Question

Okay I was brousin the local pet store on the weekend after pickin up my nelson's milk, I saw some beadies and I've been think about getting one as a pet. I asked the guy there if a 36x20x18 would be large enough for a single adult beardie, he said yes it would be but I wanted to run it by you experts before I bought one. What do you think is my cage big enough?

Reptilez, just because it's a female doesn't mean it can't grow big. I know plenty of female beardies that have outgrown their male mates.

A 50 gallon tank should be the minimum for one adult beardie. The measurements of a 50 gallon are 3 ft. long, 1 1/2 ft. wide and 1 1/2 ft. tall. You're cage measurements sound fine to me. :-D

i thought minimum width had to be 24" for an adult beardie male because their sexual organs are in the base of their tales which restricts flexibility?

Depressor... I have never heard such a thing. But it is proven that a 50 gallon tank is the minimum for any beardie, full grown, no matter the sex. My male is 16 inches at 7 months and his 50 gallon is PLENTY big!

Dragon Slave, if a beardie is 18 inches or longer then a 50 is too small. I've seen an increase in hemipenal prolapses and male infertility when males are kept in too small cages that compress their sex organs.

Eyespy, how the HECK is a 50 gallon too small? Chester has LOTS of room to run around.... and why do you keep trying to prove me wrong? I swear, every post you try to prove me wrong.. what? have you finally met you're match?

I'd have to agree with Dragon Slave. A friend of mine had an adult male (18 or 19 inches) in a 38 gallon and he never had any problems. Granted, mine is in a 4x2.5x3.5, but I doubt it makes much of a difference. Also, if he's not breeding, then it shouldn't be as big of a deal (except for the prolapses).

And trust me when I say that a 50 gallon isn't going to compress his organs. It's more than large enough for one to run around it, and is definitely not shorter than he is. For most people, fifty gallons are ideal. They're big enough for the beardy, but don't take up an entire room/apartment.
