Jumping leo!!!

Hello,

Heres a little story that just happened 5 mins ago.

I went to feed my female leo (Whippet) but she only wanted to come out of her tank, so I left the top off and went to feed my male (Orion). She has a hide that must be 4-5 inches high and likes to climb on it and try to get out of her tank but never comes close! So when she climbed I didnt worry too much but I told myself that I would take it out when I was finished with Orion. I decided to take a look at her and what she was doing when I saw here JUMP!!! about 4-5 inches diagonally and barely cling to the edge of her tank. So I immediatly droped the super worms and ran to her tank to help her get out and I put her back into her tank.
I was sure I would have a heart attack!!! I happened soo fast that I didn't have the time to realize what she had just done!!
Now she is safely back in her tank and I replaced that hide for another one that is less high.
If she would have fell out she would have fallen 5 feet to what would have probably been her death. If she would have fell in her tank she would have probably fallen on her tail and lost it. So I think I got lucky on that one!

cya!

P.S. shes in a 15 gallon tank (24X12X12)inches (the last # being the height)

I've witnessed Leo's jumping upwards before... but not in the context of escape... 2 Years ago I saw my older Leo, Basil (that's his picture for my avatar), jump. We had some moths leftover from some worms we bought and thought'd it'd be stimulating for the geckos to let them fly around the tank. Basil (who is still the most intelligent Leo I have ever owned) watched intently as the moths mindlessly fluttered around. One in particular landed and clung upside down from the screen top. It remained motionless, but my Basil never took his eyes off of it. After starring at it for what seemed like forever, he carefully stood up on his hind legs (I'm you guys have also seen that trick before), and he lept at it! It shocked me too, I mean you look at their stubby little legs and you could never imagine it! I witnessed this with my own eyes, and althoughed he looked somewhat like a drunken kangaroo he got that moth, by George! I never saw him do it after that, but then again, my collection grew and catapillars never turned into moths again. Just wanted to share my experience... never underestimate the willpower of a Leopard Gecko!!!

Leos are crazy. Chris and I just set up Diggy in a 20 gallon with some plants attached to the walls with suction sups. First thing Diggy does when he gets up there is climbs this plant all the way to the top and hangs out there for about 20 minutes. Needless to say he fell off but landed on his feet...crazy thing...we have since lowered the plants.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Leos think they are arboreal I swear.
