Amphibs out on Mainland BC

So we organised a small frog hunt and we came up with a decent number and cool finds.

I was hoping not to find too many bullfrogs and more Pacific tree frogs. Good thing we only found this one female bullfrog who looked like she was gonna shed soon.

Found 3 Pacific tree frogs. BTW, all these were not too far off the path. The ground temp was about 11 degrees celcius and the water temp was about 7-8 degrees Celcius. Pretty warm in the bog.

After try to snap decent pics in the dark with a over-eager camera flash we decided to look for North Western Salamanders under logs. Found this cute female under a mossy log.

Check out those poison glands. These guys secret a poisonous, milky looking substance through their skin when threatened.

The surprise was when we were peeping into a deep almost stagnant drain and found juvenile North Westerns in it. They were smaller and had a red stripe down their tail. I thought it was a western Redback, but turned out to be a NW. We found 2 in that water area.

Hope you enjoy the pics. Next time we're gonna go in the day for garters. Hopefully the pics turn out better with natural sunlight.

Cool. Everything here in Nova Scotia is still frozen. No frogs out yet.
