Small Species

I was looking for a smaller species of King or Milk. I read the Scarlet only gets to about 2’ which would be perfect, but hard switch to a rodent diet. Do y’all know of any other smaller species of King/Milk’s?

I've read that Mexican Milk Snakes only grow to about 2-3 feet.

If it's a small snake you're looking for that's still part of the Colubrid family, I'd suggest a male hognose or male garter. They only get about 2 feet full grown. Most hognose you can get as babies and all ready on f/t mice and garters, while they may take a mouse pinkie, also readily take live crickets and small feeder fish.

I will be looking to add both to my life later when my MBK is well established. =)

As for the size of the MBK, while being one of the smaller types, when I researched I found that it says they get about 3-4 feet, and some have been known to get up to 5 feet. So if you are wanting a type that you KNOW will stay small, look into hogs and garters.

I have those. Actually my Hog is a female. I will be getting a male probably next year. My male Garter is awesome! Ferocious eater and crawling around his cage all day.

Well I posted about wanting a snake for my 10gal. Lots of good suggestions, but I really like the King/Milk's, but wasn't really looking for a King/Milk for one. I was reading general info today and ran across the Scarlet and read the size and thought it would be perfect for a 10gal. But reading more about them, switching to a rodent diet is not always easy, and don't want to have to worry about a special diet.

Scarlet kings are escape artists and have other needs that make them NOT a good selection for a beginner. Coastal plains milk snakes stay "smaller" and the hypos are very beautiful. Just a thought there. Most sub species of milks top out around 3.5-4ft. A 10 gallon is a good starter for hatchling king/milk/hog/garters but would be too small for any of these animals as adults.
