So in the past I have always used a ceramic heat bulb and lately a radient heat panel so I'm new to the tape. I have it on the bottom of my vision tank with the thermostat probe and thermometer probe secured to the inner bottom of the cage and the paper towels on top. The reading on hot side shows 90 which is perfect but funny because I can barely feel any heat. I'm so used to feeling the heat coming off the top...
If I'm reading your post correctly you have the thermostat probe inside the cage? Put the probe directley ontop of the heat tape between the tub and adjust accordingly for a 90 degree hot spot. Always put the probe on the heat tape itself.
I use it and love the stuff. Use it for my incubator and my snakes(also use heat panels).
