Athena. :)

I got her about a week ago, so far she's doing well. Just started handling her, she warms up quick. Finally has a name, Athena, named after the Goddess of Wisdom. She's starting to feel rough along her sides, as well as slightly cloudy eyes. I think she may shed soon. Any advice on that? Also.. Still waiting for the temp and humidity gauges to get here...

Re: Athena. :)

And substrate and something to cover the walls and hides. I am surprised your posting a pic in a floorless glass tank. Nice little royal but the enclosure looks a bit wrong.

Re: Athena. :)

I see a heatmat on bare glass right under the hide. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that seems to be a burn waiting to happen. I'd fix that ASAP with atleast some subtrate like terr suggested. The glass gets very hot, and if you dont have a thermostat.....its not going to be pretty.

Re: Athena. :)

I rescued her from someone who couldn't take care of her. And it was somewhat unexpected. I plan to get her a totally new enclosure, but I had to take what was offered. I was going to use Aspen. Sensible?

Re: Athena. :)

Aspen in a high humidity tank isnt the best, i would go with a bark substrate.

Re: Athena. :)

Surf this site. All your answers regarding ball python husbandry are here. Remember it's only a rescue if you take proper care of the animal. We can help but your current setup is going to cause huge issues for the snake.

Re: Athena. :)

Good morning, welcome and grats on the new ball.

But I agree with all the above, get that heat mat cover ASAP even if you have to put a towel down for a day till you get some repti bark or Cyprus mulch. They can cause nasty burns.

Re: Athena. :)

I seriously doubt it's on a thermostat.

I don't want to wrongly accuse just incase it is, but I doubt it as well.
Just put anything down for now, and don't wait till you get a new setup, otherwise it will need rescuing from you, not by you.

Here's what I find awesome. You brought it home unexpectedly and didn't have time to stop off and pick up some mulch but you've had time enough to:

Name it
Determine it may shed soon
And have it 'warm up' to you.

Do you get a newspaper? Flyers? Do you have paper towel at home? Old bills? Any of those can be used in a pinch.

Have you checked the temperatures at all? I even ask about humidity...

Re: Athena. :)

Yup. So if the snake is in the same setup it came from where is the rescue?

Re: Athena. :)

Everything is ordered online and on it's way, I ordered it all the day I got her. Also, I do have paper towels down through the tank, this was just an early picture.

Re: Athena. :)

You understand why the photo has people excited right? Post up when you get her new enclosure set up

Re: Athena. :)

I wouldn't call it excited. Dan. I would call it mildly amusing and not at all surprising

Re: Athena. :)

Lol. Well when I read rescue and saw the all glass tank my heart sank. Glad to know the situation might be corrected. I was also not surprised
