Wheeeee! Just got a Burm
This is my second post ever on this forum
I just purchased my very first burm today. He's set to arrive friday morning. I chose an albino, and the seller has assured me he is male.
I'm not new to snake-keeping by any means... I've been keeping Colombian boas for years. I also keep and breed corns, although I'd hardly call a corn snake proper training for keeping a burm, haha. As for non-slithery members of my collection, I have a crested gecko (who is the apple of my eye) as well as a breeding trio of leopard geckos.
I am prepared for the eventuality of having to deal with a 19ft snake, but I'm hoping for him to max out around 12-15 feet, as males are supposed to. All the truly humongous burms I've ever seen have been female, and I've read that males normally stay smaller. Still, I am prepared for him to buck the norm, as snakes sometimes do. I'm also prepared to have someone around to help me handle him once he hits the 8ft mark.
I will say that this was a purchase I was planning to make a couple years down the road, but with the interstate transportation ban on burms going into effect soon here in the states, I knew that it was now or never. I am afraid that if I don't make a purchase now, I will not be able to pick and choose which breeder I can buy from, instead I will be limited to Michigan. Also, while I doubt that Michigan will pass a state ban (the climate here is not conducive to escaped burms running around), if that does happen in the future, I want to be grandfathered in, as those laws usually allow. So, it's happening a bit sooner that I had envisioned, but I'm sure it'll be a fun ride. I've been dreaming of owning one of these beautiful and magnificent animals since I was a teen.
I still have yet to pick a name...but I can do that while he's settling into his quarantine enclosure.
So...yeah. Hello! And I look forward to getting to know you all on this forum!

Re: Wheeeee! Just got a Burm
Congrats! Welcome to the giants family!
My burm purchase was also made sooner than anticipated as a result of the ban. I'm sure you'll love yours.
Might I enquire which breeder you purchased him from and how old he is?

Re: Wheeeee! Just got a Burm
Congratulations! My big albino Burm is one of my favorite snakes. He is by far the sweetest thing ever- he will put his big head in my lap when I open his cage, and the neighborhood kids love to play with him outside in the summer.
The most important thing to remember is to plan for fast growth- Burms can grow up to a foot a month, although reaching 8 feet in the first year is much more common. Females grow faster than males, but males will still pack on the size rapidly. Make sure your temps and humidity are spot-on, as Burms are very susceptible to respiratory infections.

Re: Wheeeee! Just got a Burm
Thanks everyone! I'll post a pic when he arrives...I think I'll create a separate thread for that, so that I can do a poll and you can all help me name him!

Re: Wheeeee! Just got a Burm
Congrats! I think you'll really love the burm. They are, for the most part, gentle and docile. They have a huge feeding response as well. They're really easy to overfeed too so keep a watch on how much you feed your little man.
I had a burm years ago before I got out of keeping snakes. When I started keeping again, 2 albino burms (both girls) were my second and third purchases. I absolutely love these animals

Yeah, youre right. Snakes can break the norm in that way. I have one that proves that point. I am glad youre prepared for that possibilty.
