Female or Male?

Hello all,

I am wondering why Female BP's are more expensive then males?
Could someone please give me a good answer. It seems to me that a male should be more expensive. For example, you can breed a male albino bp to many females, while a female albino ball python can only be breed by one male. It seems like a male would bring you more "bang" for your buck. Anyways, please give me the reason females are more expensive

Regards,
Jerad

Snakedude is exactly right females do hold the extra value. Females are what produce the eggs and do cater to what most keepers want. The females gererally are the larger of the two as well for python keepers that want to keep a large robust snake.

Ok,

If one was to start a breeding project say in albinos, would it not be smarter to buy an albino male and a bunch of female hets? The Albino Male could breed them all, while to get the same results you would have to buy many albino females, which would cost much more money. It seems to only make sense that a male SHOULD be more. Please post replies..

There are 2 main reasons why females are more expensive than males. Here are the main ones:

1) Usually the breeder keeps back quite a few females from each produce to raise up for breeding stock.

2) Ball python males will generally breed anywhere from 3-10 females. Thus, one male can "service" many females. So, the breeder does not have to keep back as many males as females.

When a project is in it's infancy males are more expensive than females. The reason for this is supply and demand. Everyone wants males from the new mutation to breed to their normal females and make hets. When the market has been established males are cheaper than females as again it is supply and demand. If you have 10.2 albino balls to sell you are going to lower the price on the males to sell them.
