Retained shed?
I saw this picture on the snakebytes forums and I've never personally heard of this happening before so was hoping to get some information
They are claiming that its 4-5 layers of retained shed.

Re: Retained shed?
Any idea why a snake would retain its shed?

Re: Retained shed?
Total crap husbandry.. no humidity, no activity, nothing to rub it's nose against, a multitude of things all leading to a poor animal husbandry.

Re: Retained shed?
That would have to be a glass enclosure without a water bowl wouldn't it? I'm assuming they can shed on anything when that have that many layers on.

Re: Retained shed?
Wow. That looks almost like a BP under there. Poor Guy. Definetly a screen lided tank. Probably pine chips and no water or very little. That's going to be super fun to deal with. Hopefully it all comes off at once. As much as I doubt it.

Re: Retained shed?
i'm a little skeptical of this photo, and i'll tell you why....
even the unhealthiest snake, living in the most horrible conditions can still manage to shed some. one would almost have to TRY and make a snake not shed even just a little. if the entire snake looks like that, then i'm not buying it.

Re: Retained shed?
I doubt it has 5 perfect layers as-well but its scary to think that a reptile owner could let their pets become that far gone.

I would rather keep a snake in most other forms of enclosures over glass tanks with screen tops.
You also missed an N in that third word:P

Re: Retained shed?
Noone should say that glass tanks will NEVER work for snakes, however, it is plain to see from all the posts on this and other forums that it is much easier to keep humidity levels stable in a purpose built vivarium than an aquarium.

Right, I have kept my Thamnophis collection in glass forever without any issues.

Re: Retained shed?
If you're determined to use glass tanks (Lol, like me, but I do want to build something better for my bp - but first i need to finish building that lid for another enclosure) you deffinetly need a lot of patience, and actually pay attention constantly to the temp and humidity levels and make sure they're alright. I don't think there's anything horrably wrong with glass tanks, expecially with snakes with little humidity requirements, but I do hate seeing people that don't even know what sort of humidy their snake needs just toss it into a glass tank with a light, crappy substrate, and think it's okay... (The condition I got my corn and bp in)

Re: Retained shed?
There isn't anything wrong with glass, it just means that you have to dedicate more time to each enclosure checking humidity and when your collection gets larger that extra time adds up.
