I'm thinking of moving my two colonies of mice into rubbermaid bins to free up some floor space. What size ventilation holes should I drill and how many?

lol.. first i think you were talking about frozen dead mice.. i'd say drill holes along the top of the rubbermaids.. so maybe the mice/rats cant chew through them

I wouldnt try drilling holes, and whatever the container make sure it has no internal edges. Any holes or edge will give the mice a starting point to chew... and mice chew ALOT! For ventilation just convert the lid, cut out most of it and put in metal mesh. Hoels don't provide enough ventilation anyways, it will get humid and thats the last thing you want with breeding mice...stinky!!!...

We use 48 qt. sterilite containers, all holes are drilled along the upper regions of the container including the lid. Holes are about 3/16" of an inch and there are a bunch of them. We've had our adults in them for several months without problems. We also give them 2-3 paper towel tubes to chew on, a hide box and they are kept on kiln-dried pine shavings.
Rats are kept in 20g. longs with heavy gauge wire mesh bent into a lid with several bricks holding down all corners and sides & middle.... water bottle has a galvanized guard.
No probs with humidity in our case, plenty of cross ventilation and they are kept in the quietest & darkest part of our house. Cages are cleaned weekly and water & food checked daily. We use plenty of pine shavings to negate the smell. Actually, there is no smell whatsoever from our mice and/or rat cages. They also have in each cage a heavy gauge mesh 'platform' that their food is placed on.. though they use it for lounging around more than anything. {G}
Works for us, hope that helps.
Jon

45q-65q Sterilite bins here, I cut an 8x10 hole in the top and glue down some hardware cloth, I Also have some large mixing tubs I bought at home depot that would make much better containers for mice just fasion some hardware cloth to fit the top. Food could be placed on top in an indentation and they would lend themselfs to to easy racking. Don't bother drilling any holes. just go with a big hole in the top, rats urinate alot and breath alot too wich creates tons of humidity. Lower ventilation will also lead to higher temps, wich increases urine output and decreases mating.

If you have an aquaruim center near by, try getting an aquarium. The one near me sells the broke aquariums for $2 US. Most times all I need to do is seal the crack with silicone.

I find the freezer works best for me. they don't smell, don't bite, don't make any noise unless you drop them....
