Goodbye to my friend
Late Saturday night, Freckles, my little baby somehow got out of her tank. I heard a scuffling (my cat chasing something) and woke up to investigate. I heard a scream, and knew the worst had happnend. Luckily, I knew where to find her because I had heard her scream. So I retireved her with help from my boyfriend.
She was in bad shape. She had a punctured lung, 3-4 lacerations on her body and a missing eye. I took her to the bathroom to get a better look, and saw that her belly was full of blood. She had internal bleeding. I was convinced she wouldn't make it overnight. I would have euthanised her myself, but did not know how to do it without being sure I didn't make her suffer anymore, so we left her in a shoebox where it is dark, and waited for the internal bleeding to eventually put her to sleep and she would just stop breathing.
The next morning at 10. (this happened at 4 AM) I woke up to check, and she was still alive. the wound in her lung had scealed itself up, she was breathing better...
We took her to the emergency vet right away they did the exam, but they were honest with us, they could keep her and give her injectable antibiotics and watch her until she started eating, I knew she would have to be hand fed the rest of her life because of missing one eye. Even with the injections, there was a very little chance she would make it beyond the infection, seeing as it was in her lungs and abdomen.
After some time, I decided it best that we put her down.
They gave her the injection and brought her out to be with me while she went away. We then tooke her home, and buried her in the tulip garden.
She will be very, vey missed.

I am very sorry to hear of your loss. I recently experienced a loss myself so I know how you are feeling right now. Don't feel bad as you did the best you could. Again, sorry to hear of your loss...

She climbs on the tree in her tank all the time. We have a lid on it, but there must have been a hole or gap or something because she DID get out.
What makes this worse is it was totally preventable, but I STILL can't find the gap. I am making a new lid just to be safe..
And thanks all for your wishes.

So sorry to hear about Freckles. I just lost my baby albino, Molly, about 2 hours ago (don't know why - "failure to thrive" despite good check-ups by vet), but at least she died quietly, and I hope, peacefully.
Hope you have many good memories of Freckles.

Sorry to hear about your leo..... It is alway a sad thing when we loose a pet..... Again, I am sorry about your pet...... And CrankyPunk, There is no reason to rub salt in the wound..... I am sure she is upset as it is and is aware of the fact it could have been prevented..... Trust me, I am very strict with caging but there is still no reason why you should be kicking someone while they are down......
Two word to keep animals in all glass aquariums.....
CAGE CLIPS......

Very sorry about your gecko dying. That's very upsetting I am sure. I'd like to make a suggestion to prevent further misfortunes for you....when you say this:
"I am making a new lid just to be safe.."
Why not just buy a reptile screen lid? They are made to keep animals in if used properly and properly fitted, and are not that expensive. (I am not talking about wire lids, but the screen lids with the knobs you twist a catch under the rim and hold it tight)

Hi Marisa,
The problem with this is 2 things,
1) the tank she was in is one of those rounded front ones, where the rounded part has glass and a rectangle opening but not enough to support the weight of the lid
2) screnn top lids don't work for me because of the cats, they can either A) cut it open, or B) jump on top and pull the screening down with their weight.
So I really need home made with the wire screening (mesh) so it hold up. I have already fixed it, I have no choice because Zipper is still in there. Now I am hoping Zipper doesn't have any setbacks... seeing as she is alone now, she and Freckles have been together all their life...
