can you id this snake?

I found a snake today that I have never seen and I think might be an ex pet
location- GA in an old structure over water- the snake was about 6 or 7 feet off the waters surface in a rafter
Size- 5- 51/2 feet long
Markings- Brown or black with tan markings- underside of head is white

Any help would be grand

That is definitely a black rat snake. They call them "chicken snakes" down in your neck of the woods. They're good for rodent control on your property, but they're grouchy. They rarely ever tame down.
