Gotta hoggie!

Well since we got paid today and we just happened to have an extra water bowl, rubbermaid, and heat pad laying around.......... we got a western hognose snake from a very good pet shop. It's one of those rare ones.

They breed their own, and are (next year) attempting to get into albino westerns!

I have never seen such aggressive little snakes! He brought them out in something like deli cups (but bigger) and there was one that was striking so hard that it nearly knocked it's self off the counter!
Then when the guy was trying to show me the diffreneces in tail length (for sexing) and the little western was following his hand around with it's little mouth open (probably wasn't big enough to fit around his finger!)
But a tag is a tag! lol.

Everyone always talks about their cute up turned noses. When I picked one up I seen their belly! How come no one ever talks about their shiny black white/yellow belly? Or the orange (varries in shades) little block of color by their vent?!

Well we got one that is about 8 inches long, (not like I can get it to hold still lol) and was hatched in july. So it's about 6 months old this month.......does that sound about right?

Anyways if you haven't read in Birchaddict's post yet, He already gave us a scare!

We got him home and set him up, a good 3 inches of aspen shavings, and a water bowl. We left to go pick up a digi thermometer.
When we got back and I went to put the probe over the UTH I couldn't find him! OMG. I sifted through it and got more and more frantic. I FINALLY picked up a "clump" of aspen shavings that didn't want to fall apart......little b*****d almost gave us a heart attack.

The rubbermaid is now (as it was before we left) taped at all loose feeling parts......I can't even fit the tip of a needle all the way under the lid.

we were also told that he was fed thursday...every thursday....guaranteed feeder on pinkie mice...... can't wait to try!

And maybe maybe ONE DAY we will have pics. lol....................MAYBE.

As soon as I read this I literally shuddered..... Tape should never be anywhere near a snake's enclosure, it's too risky. It's best to avoid the problem than learn the hard way. So many people have claimed that the snake will never be able to touch it, and are in awe when they find that the snake has somehow managed to get stuck and has either died or been injured. Just a word of caution....
Here's a recent example (there are many more and the majority don't have Oliverian's good fortune in that she was able to save it).
Good luck and have fun!
Welcome to the world of the odd-toothed snakes (Xenodont).
Cheers,
R
Just be careful

Oh No!!!!! It's NOT inside the enclosure! It's on the outside. On all 4 of the cornors and one in between the cornors on the long side.
As I said, you can't even get a needle under there. so there is no way he can get his nose stuck on any tape......believe me! I made sure of that, because on the way home he was in a deli cup and the lid had a little lip on the inside, he was taking the upturned part of his nose, sticking it on the rim of the lip and like picking at the deli cup lid to try and get it off, all the way home we heard, " tick, tick tick tick tick.......silence...............tick tick tick tick tick......" the kind that can really get on your nerves! lol

And sometime today we are getting some different bungies. We got some last night but they are to small to fit around it!

me? post pics? whats that? I can never get around to even delopoing the film, much less getting them on the net. lol I have film from 1 year ago waiting to be developed. so once I finally finally get some pics up, don't expect any more for like 1-1.5 years!!!!!! LOL

congratulations I'm getting at least one this coming summer and cant wait.
Do you have any idea how much the albinos will cost? The breeder here sells them for 3000 $
I was wondering if that was normal price or a horrible one

I really wouldn't know.

But since MY normal (in the states) cost 65 US dollars ( It was brought down from 80 us dollars) and they were talking about albinos......so lets see, a morph like an albino is usually like 5 times the amount of a normal so..........5 times 80 is 400 dollars ( US dollars) so depending on age and sex you are probably looking at anywhere from 400 dollars and up.....

BUT DON'T qoute me on that! I could be wrong! lol

Aren't the amelanistic <html><i>nasicus</i></html> worth around $1000.00 U.S. ?

Congratulations on your little guy. They really are a lot of fun to keep.

I really wouldn't know. I was just doing a guestimation (a guess and an estimation, lol) For complete information you would have to contact various breeders and see what the average seems to be.

As do I. You might find some breeders that charge a little less for their snakes. But you would probably have to search really hard for them...

Mine has little red stripes going from it's head to tail.
