My new Hypo (carrot tail?) Blitz
here we go Just picked him up today.
Let me know what you think? Enough orange to call him Carrot Tail? In either case I think he's pretty cute!
Slan

He's a very handsome boy, congrats on the new addition! IMO, not really enough orange on his tail to call him a carrot tail, but he's a very nice hypo

Quick question then,
How much orange do you need to be considered carrot tail? The only figure I can remember seeing is 15% which Blitz may or may not have I know i've seen carrot tails with better than 50% orange as well however.

Not sure how much, but I can tell you that your little guy there isnt a carrottail gene, he has too little of it and it is too lightly coloured, althgough he is a very nice hypo. Here is an example of my best one at the moment:
and another shot

Ah ok, I see the difference now. So my guy is just sorta Orangey
The orange in his tail is darker than the pictures indicate... my digicam doesn't do colour balancing worth a damn. I need to get a new one...

Some of the differences between true leopard carrot-tails and carrot-tails-wanna-be's.
I've used tails from some of my own breeders or their offspring to illustrate the differences - and it's easy to tell, once you've seen a few....
(full-sized picture here - big file)
You can call your leopard(s) anything you want, but if you want to be technical about it, they should have 'true carrot-tail' genes from the Ray Hine line (the original breeder). As you can see in the picture, there's a big difference between 'lots of orange in the tail' and 'carrot-tail'. It's almost like the old Kleenex controversy - we ask for a Kleenex, but will take any brand of facial tissue. The true carrot-tails are the Kleenex brand, but regular leos with lots of orange on their tails are Brand X. True carrot-tails also have a unique shade of tangerine in their body colour, and most seem to have a more slender build as well. They almost seem long and slim, though with all the cross-breeding to non-carrot-tails, the body shape is becoming stouter and shorter. The dark banding seen in normal leopard tails is usually very pale grey, or even absent in carrot-tails, though it can be very dark grey or black in carrot crosses.
