sexing amels

Hey everyone I was just wondering what I would be looking for when candeling a young amel. He(she) is about 2 months old is that still young enough? Any tips or pointers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I advise you to leave candeling to eggs, your little amel probably would find it strange you trying to shine a light through him. A good pic of the tail/vent from the side so the dorsal and ventral horizons were clear would probably get you the info you need.

Candleing? I don't think you should candle anything that is moving! Leave that to eggs......take him/her to an expert (breeder or vet) and have them do it!

In the corn snake manual they talk about using a strong narrow beamed light to shine up through an amel. I was just wondering what the hemipenes look like. Has anyone used his technique before?

actually I have used this method before.
But then sometimes its actually quite hard to tell. Cause I have seen some females have tiny hemipenes....only without blood vessles.
I do sometimes 'candle' it before I pop. Just to see what to expect, but I usually go with poping to make sure afterwards. After poping and seeing a male with hemipenes that doesn't have too much blood vessles around it, I go with probing. Just to be sure....

I don't think that the 'candling' always work and is not too accurate...so my advice is go with poping or probing. As an experienced herper to help you do so~

Popping is one thing I have to learn, I can probe no problem but I don't wanna do that on the little guys.
