I love them all. I find my three toed are easier to take care of then my ornates. But I have heard that easterns are hardy as well. gulf Coast are expensive and hard to find. I would stay away from the Asian species until you are more experianced ( I know they're really cool). Their care requirements are harder to meet. So I would have to say three toed or easterns. Buy the way once you get a box turtle your hooked and won't want to spend money on anything else. Yes they are that cool and rewarding to keep.
