perfect prey

Hi all. I've been using Big Cheese for my frozen feeders the past couple of years. I'm very happy with their products, service and prices. However, they're out of large rats at the moment and I need them. I'm thinking about trying Perfect Prey and was wondering if any of you had good or bad experiences with them. How was the packaging and quality of their feeders? I'd appreciate any input. Also, do any of you feed your snakes ASF's? I was thinking of ordering a few just to give the snakes a little more variety. They already eat rats, mice and chicks.

Re: perfect prey

I have purchased twice from them. Overall quality was good, but my last order of jumbo adult mice were on the smaller side. Shipping and packaging have been great.

Re: perfect prey

I order from both Perfect Prey and Big Cheese, depending on who is having a sale and what is in stock. I am quite happy with both companies, never had any issues, sizes, feeders, and packaging are great, and always arrive fast and frozen.

I have bought ASF's from them for a picky snake, who didn't like "regular" rats, but I thought might like the ASF's. Turns out the snake didn't, but I have other snakes that happily gobbled them up.

Re: perfect prey

I have ordered from them as well and have been very happy with the quality and cleanliness of the rats I ordered. I will definitely be ordering from them again.

Re: perfect prey

I've only ever ordered from rodentpro, no issues so far and the $29 flat rate shipping seems pretty reasonable to me. I started with them because they also carry quail, and one of my younger pairs of DRMB's were feeding on those when I got them. (Still are for that matter, though the female also takes fuzzy mice now.) I have seen a couple complaints about cleanliness of their larger rats, but I'm only using pinks/fuzzies/pups, so no personal experience with the larger ones.

Re: perfect prey

@ TnB- I tried RP twice and had issues with the cleanliness of their feeders. Their packaging was 'just ok' as well. Big Cheese also has the $29 shipping and Perfect Prey was in that ballpark too. I called Big Cheese and they'll have large rats in a few days so I could just go with what I know, but Perfect Prey has ASFs and I wanted to try a new prey item with the snakes. I guess the question now is which philosophy to go with. If it's not broke don't fix it or Variety is the spice of life.

Oh well Big Cheese is now sold out of medium and large rats so it looks like I'll be trying Perfect Prey after all. I'll let you all know how it goes.

Re: perfect prey

How long will that last you?

When I getthe new house I plan on getting my own freezer and want to get feeders every 3-6 months but will have such a variety of sizes Idon't know how well that will work.

Re: perfect prey

@ Mink- This order should last me at least 4-6 months. I've also got about another month's worth of feeders still in the freezer. I really needed some small and large rats, mostly for my bull snakes, so I decided to just place an order for the whole gang. I usually buy a range of sizes that I know my snakes will grow into over the next few months. My 140g jungle is on rat fuzzys but will soon need rat pups, which I already have, so I just bought weaners for him. I will probably have a few small rats left over when he's ready for those. My 400g coastal is eating rat weaners which I'm almost out of but he's just about ready for small rats. My male bull is on smalls but should go to mediums in the next month or two. I already have one unopened pack of mediums so he's good to go. My female bull is on mediums but she's definitely ready for large rats which is why I bought so many of those. I only bought the chicks and ASF's for variety. I'll give them to all of the snakes. I had to buy a separate freezer for snake food last year too. That was a great investment.

Re: perfect prey

Dang...and you only have like 6 snakes...lol

I will definitely have to look into that. Right now I but about a 2 month supply from my local store who buy from RP and I have noticed they definitely smell kinda bad (dirty) so look forward to ordering but just can't justify it with a tiny shared freezer.

Re: perfect prey

I asked a semi-local rodent breeder about ASF's, and he told me they're mainly a BP food item, apparently they eat them in the wild. Variety is fine IF your critters will eat them, bull snakes strike me as likely to anyway, but my crowd would more likely refuse them as unfamiliar and they'd be wasted.

Yeah I figure it can't hurt to try something new. I'm pretty confident they'll get eaten, but if not its a lesson learned and I'll find a BP owner to give them to . The kings aren't too crazy about rats but they'll eat mice and chicks. Perhaps the ASFs will bridge that gap. My bulls and carpets have eaten anything I've given them so far and I'm hoping that trend continues. That's also why I only bought one pack and its size they can all eat. Fingers crossed.

Re: perfect prey

My ball python will hardly ever eat asf's. But my kingsnakes don't have any problem eating them. Go figure. Ymmv.
