Hognose or something else?
I was looking at smaller snakes, because my boyfriend has a (i believe) 20 gallon tank so I was just kind of wondering what would be good to fit in there? I've been having my eye on Western Hognoses but I'm just curious if there's other cool small snakes to keep? Wouldn't be getting it soon. Still gotta get my IJ on track with feeding and health and such. Just kinda looking around. Thanks.

Re: Hognose or something else?
I absolutely love my Western Hognose. I have never once regretted my choice in getting him. He's adorable and has a personality to go along with it.

Re: Hognose or something else?
I like hoggies too. Im considering getting one myself. Ive heard they can be hard to get on f/t mice consistently but I'm nit sure how true that is. I have a Cal King and an MBK that I love to pieces. They dont get too big, they're great eaters, and have great temperaments. They might needna larger tank as adults though. Best wishes with whatever you choose.

I get to be the debbie downer and say "Don't forget that technically they are rear-fanged and thus venomous."
Yes it's not deadly...yet. There's a thread somewhere on this forum of a previous member who's hand blew up after being bit and it wasn't a pleasant experience for her.

I know, that's what first made me think "maybe not..." But I'll keep it in mind. and I'll make sure that if/when I get one I'm super careful for a bit. Thanks~

Re: Hognose or something else?
Other snakes to consider are: garter snakes, or African house snakes.

Re: Hognose or something else?
im putting in another plug for rosy boas, they come in quite a few locality/color variations, are a hefty but small bodied snake, and are very easy to care for. My rosy is one of my favorite snakes i own! i think hoggies tend to be a bit more active, and have quite a few interesting behaviors, but i love how relaxed and calm my rosy is.

Re: Hognose or something else?
From my experience, sand boas have variable personalities and always hide. Hognose can be fairly active, they are "cute" [as snakes go] but should fed a little more often than most snakes [every 4-5 days]. House snakes are more or less the African equivalent of a corn snake or kingsnake, but they look like little pythons.
Of course, garters have a good following if you want something active and versatile. Ask Infernalis about them.

Really like this idea, Garters come in a potpourri of colors; and stay small, and are diurnal (if I'm not mistaken), so they give you something to look at during the day.

Re: Hognose or something else?
I own a Hognose and mine has never bit me, just strike; never opened his jaws.
