Just to liven things up...

Well I haven't been around in a while but with hatchling season over I've found myself with some spare time on my hands. The adults are all down for brumation...actually they have been for over a month now and will soon be waking up. I thought some of you might be interested in seeing some of my holdbacks for the '08 season.

First up is Gadsby...an anery stripe who has good possibilities for being also homogenous for bloodred (diffusion)...only time and breeding trials will prove him out.



Now this little cutie has to be my favorite of the season. She's an Anery Sunkissed and I'm really excited about how this little one will eventually colour up. Meet Faith...



Yukon is a suspected Ultra Caramel male. I also held back his sibling sister, Ophelia who may well be the isolated Ultra gene carrier I need to start making some very neat double and triple combos for the future.

Chaplin is an Ultra (could possibly be an Ultramel...only breeding trials will prove him out) Striped Motley. What a wicked pattern this boy has.




Aren't too many of these in North America either, so Arrow is rather special around here. He's an Ultramel Stripe.



From the Bloodred projects here's the two I heldback...Micah, a Charcoal Bloodred or Pewter. And from the same clutch, this little cutie, Brandy. She should mature into a nicely coloured classic Bloodred.



Micah is a little blue...but none the less still photogenic.



Now it's time to look forward to 2009. My shelves are looking a little bare these days with just my keepers remaining, but that only gives me more reason to set about making some positive, constructive plans for next year's crop.

Wonderful little corns you have there. I was curious if you could post a picture of what a "normal" sunkissed looks like! I've been curious since seeing the anery ones.

I do really like the ultramel striped.

Thanks Aaron. Here's some Sunkisseds for you. Here are some '07's (my keepers) and the last is '08' male we produced (sibling to the Anery Sunkissed pictured above). Wicked head patterns for sure!









This year I will be testing the parents to this clutch for the Stargazing gene. If clean (free of the S+ factor), then 2010 should see Sunkisseds available to the general public. At present, any Sunkisseds and potential hets from this line are in the hands of selected breeders in Ontario and Alberta for safekeeping. Nothing is being released until we know that all from this line are clean. We want to ensure that any projects using this gene are free of stargazing.

Is the sunkissed a single morph? A couple morphs combined to make it or something like the Candy Cane, in that it was just snakes selectively bred for a desired look?

Sunkissed is a morph. It is one of the hypomelanistic genes...Hypo B. Kathy love discovered it in her Okeetee line. Pretty darn impressive isn't it.

It hasn't been worked with much. But now a few of us realize the potential this particular hypo morph has to make some awesome combinations. Once the lines are cleared, I'll be combining it with several other morphs to make double and triple combos. In most cases, the homo Sunkisseds also present with those wicked head patterns even when combined with other morphs. The saddles are noticeably longer, more squared...and motleys don't always have clear bellies as most of the other morphs do. It will be interesting to see if Striped Sunkisseds will be patternless on their bellies as other morphs are, or will also have random belly checks as well.

There is so much to discovery about this gene and its workings. I'm excited to get these lines cleared. I've a pair of Normals, het sunkissed, anery, motley (the parents of the hatchlings pictured) and also 2 more adults, a pair, Sunkissed from another source. One male and possibly 2 females will be tested this year.

Hmm, she found it in her Okeetee line? So you mean she found the colours and bred them into others? Can you have a het for sunkissed?

In cornsnakes all morphs come from recessive genes. Normals are dominant. Sunkissed is a recessive gene and yes, it can be heterozygous as it was in the case of Kathy's. She bred two Okeetees, both of which happened to be carrying 1 gene only for the hypomelanistic colouring...sort of an oddball in the clutch. With using the same parents...more were produced. Holdbacks were kept and bred..and the sunkissed was now proven to be genetic...with its own unique look.

Both my proven breeders are het for sunkissed as mentioned above. Phenotypically they are normals, genotypically they are het for sunkissed, anery and motley. So when bred together I get a variety pack. From this pairing so far I've produced normals, normal motleys, anerys, sunkisseds, anery sunkisseds; it's a variable roll of the dice.

It's all very interesting. Although, jumping into the cornsnake morph pool is a troubling thing. I could never keep up with them all! People think the ball python morphs are crazy. I tell them to go look up the cornsnakes, we are just catching up now!

I should take some new pics of my yearling Kisseds. With all the adults due up from brumation in 3 weeks, if I don't do it soon, I won't get it done.

Yup...I'm really looking forward to this year's breeding plans. Still aren't finalized as yet, but there should be another interesting crop of young ones again. No sunkisseds this year but lots of diffused and diffused stripes planned in a few colours, the start of the Ultra combo projects, and of course a few projects fulfilled with holdbacks of '06 holdbacks. It should be an exciting year for some variety...and of course that means more holdbacks. It's a vicious cycle...but then that's the fun of it.

Hope those Okees go this year I got from you. Got a few interesting ideas for that male. He's got a couple of dates lined up this year...he better be up for the job!
