Racks or terrariums ?

I noticed a lot of you use or want to use racks as opposed to terrariums. Why is this?

I only use terrariums, as I feel this is the closest the animals can come to nature itelf.

Mainly its to save room. The snakes dont really care how natural their setup looks as long as they have everything they need, infact many snakes feel better in the harder to see through containers used in racks, they feel safer.

i agree, it is mainly to save space. when people have a whole lot of snakes or a lot of babies if they breed, they cant afford to buy 50+ expensive cages. i know that i will use racks for all my babies and large plastic enclosures for all my adults. but the internal setups will always be the same. newspaper substrate, a water bowl, and a hide box. i will never have an enclosure more complex than that.

Another thing is that plasic containers are so much more cheaper and easier to clean when compared to glass.

I myself like the stackable cages such as Vision cages or Boaphile cages. Although, I have had Visions warp one me. I will get racks when I start to breed my boas again, they are easy to get and clean and they are cheap.

So I understand that it's mainly to save space. I can understand that, because the four terrariums I have now is already taking up a huge amount of space in my room.

If you do have your snakes in plastic containers, then you can't really see them (Is'nt that why you keep them?) and nor can you display them to your friends, relatives etc., etc. Then a twerrarium is better for that purpose ???

If you plan on having display animals yes a terrarium would be best, that way you wouldnt have to go and drag evey snake out just for your friends and family to see.

Well, that seems like one thing I'm doing that's ok.
I've read before and heard that, quite obviously if you use real sand, plants, rocks etc., etc (Like I do.) the chances are just so much better for the snakes getting diseases and lice etc. (If indeed so, then shall I treat them all with some sort of a oily mixture...?)

As long as you treat every thing before you put it into the cage you should be fine. Mites would be the biggest problem, I treated all my herps with Provent A Mite in there tanks every month and the snakes I used Snake Polish (Also called Snake Oil) so if any mites got into the tanks they had no chance of making it.

I use these old rubbermaid boxes that are pretty darn see-through so I don't have too much of a problem not being able to see them.

How will I notice, or what can I look for to see i my snake do have mites/lice etc., ec. ?:medfrown:

Little black dots in between the scales of the chin. Little black dots moving in the tank and on the snake. Little white dots which are the mits feces. Lice only effect certain species of mammals and birds, each species will have its own species of lice. Lice arnt attracted to reptiles do to the fact that lice need hair and or fur/feathers to attach there egg sacks to and to keep a grip on. What you have to worry about are mites and ticks. Ticks Im sure you know what to look for, just your normal tick that would attach its self to you. If you think your herps have mites let me know and Ill tell you what I do to treat them for it and what you can do to keep them away.

I check the water daily and if you have mites, there will definitely be little black specks in the water. Snakes with mites almost always soak in their bowls to drown them and relieve the pain.
