Keeping snakes by the window?

Kind of a stupid question-

A lot of sources claim you should not keep your snake near a window because that can cause the snake to overheat or die. I don´t live in an especially hot area, I just want to put a BP on a huge unused desk near my window to provide indirect window lighting. Should I get led lighting instead?

Re: Keeping snakes by the window?

Monitor temperature and place the enclosure so it is only halfway into the sunlight so there is an escape should it get too hot?

Just a thought, I have no idea or first hand knowledge. I try to set up an enclosure for 4 weeks without the animal to make sure I can get the heat and humidity correct before placing the animal inti the enclosure. This is not always possible though.

Yeah, I plan to set up the enclosure a few weeks or days before getting the animal to get the humidity, heat, and such correct as well as reduce stress for the animal. I guess we'll see once I get it set up.

Re: Keeping snakes by the window?

I guess the simple question is:

If experienced keepers have been advising against it for years, why do it?

There's a reason it's advised not to put a reptile enclosure in front of a window. Years of experience tells us the temps fluctuate too much and heat spikes can be fatal.

So, there's no way I would risk that with my animals. We have the knowledge to know better, the animals don't get a say... So, if we know it's advised against because it's dangerous, why do it? That's just irresponsible in my opinion.

Fair point. I'll have to move my desk to a shadier part of my room. I'll buy led/uvb lights for the live plants I plan to put in there.

That’s good that you’re moving your tank.

Sunlight and heat magnifies inside a glass tank. It can get dangerously hot inside even when it feels fine outside of the tank.

Glass and sunlight can equal dangerous temperatures

Re: Keeping snakes by the window?

I have a few enclosures that are near a window but I guess they're not in direct sunlight. The blinds also block some of the heat.

I'm new and don't have an answer to your question -- I just wanted to say that my daughter's snake is named Noodle and she calls him "Danger Noodle"! LOL!
