German Herpers?

I will be moving to Germany (Göttingen) for one year in January. I'd very much like to get in touch with herpers there and attend some meetings and shows. I emailed one of the big German herp...

Re: Extra wide head??

They really are not normal size/shape. I'm wondering if someone hybridized somewhere back in their line . . . or if the RIs they had could have caused the change . . . but how would the RI cause a...

Re: Rescue

Amadeus, the symptoms that have been reported for these snakes are commensurate with IBD. That's why I ask. I posted a couple of links to information about IBD earlier that you might read for more...

Extra wide head??

A friend of mine got a pair of BPs as in January as a h/clown pair. They both came with RI, which has been treated and is gone, and they are eating normally.

They currently appear to be very...

Re: Chondro seems to lazy to shed?

If you're using an AcuRite, where is it located in the enclosure? One of the problems people have with accurate measurement is that they don't place the hygrometer or thermometer where the snake is,...

Re: Rescue

Have you taken them to a vet and had blood tests done for IBD?

Re: Sunshine

Welcome! Glad you're more awake now, and hope you're having a great Fourth!

Sounds like you've fallen into the same trap as a bunch of us here . . . can't resist a challenge, or can't resist the...

Re: Chondro seems to lazy to shed?

AcuRites are reasonably good for their price. I just meant that even an inexpensive digital gauge is better than any analog gauge. I actually use AcuRites on my colubrid tanks and they're fine. For...

Re: help!!!

This is really not a good sign at all. If you had given us this information earlier, I would have said, "Get her to the vet NOW!" much earlier. As it is, you really need to get her to a vet first...

Re: Husbandry emergency, dying animal :-/

Thanks for letting us know, smy. You did the best you could under harsh circumstances. Sometimes we just have to try even when we can't succeed.

Re: Chondro seems to lazy to shed?

What do you mean by a "household" humidity gauge? If it's one of those dial things, they are notoriously inaccurate. You need a digital humidity gauge.

Even an AcuRite or a La Crosse digital gauge...

Re: help!!!

Swollen face/head? Not a good sign. I would take her to a vet, preferably a herp-certified vet, IMMEDIATELY.

Re: Bad shed continued

That's a good suggestion as long as the prey item is F/T or prekilled. Many of my colubrids won't eat immediately but will eat if I leave a F/T prey item in with them. I wouldn't ever try this with a...

Re: Rescue

I would be very concerned about these snakes having IBD--Inclusion Body Disease. Have you taken them to a vet? A blood test could rule out IBD (or confirm it).

Inclusion Body Disease...

Re: Snake isn't eating

Small insects, too. May need to see things moving to go for them. Probably needs to think it's alone to eat, too; my rough green snake won't eat with me watching.

Re: Bad shed continued

For now, I would recommend you stick with paper toweling. The nice thing about using plain white paper toweling is that any parasites that drop off onto it are highly visible, so paper toweling could...

Re: help!!!

Stuck eyecaps would be my guess, too. As MBK Boy suggested, pics, especially close-ups of her head and eyes, could be very helpful. We'll need the details of her husbandry as LankyRob requested, too.

Re: New Snake Guy

Make sure that the hides and any rocks or heavy branches touch the bottom of the tank, not just the surface of the aspen. If she burrows under a heavy object, it could fall on her and injure her. If...

Re: Husbandry emergency, dying animal :-/

Yes, every hatchling looks pretty much like that. There are variations on the beak shape & appearance, but that's a typical baby bird body with no feathers. Poor little guy!

And that's the real...

I am one of the rescue coordinators for my local herp society, and I've seen snakes in horrible, horrible condition. People lie...

Re: Husbandry emergency, dying animal :-/

First, you need to try to identify the species. If it's an insectivore, it MUST have insects for food or its bones will not develop properly. If it's not an insectivore, worms would be fine. But...

I get the same error message, and I can't even get to finegtps.com, so it appears their website is down for some reason.

Anyway, thanks for sharing the pics--gorgeous snakes! and for the...
