If you thaw the rat in really hot water you are going to cook the rat. Just leave it at room temp. A medium rat shouldnt take more...

If its a screen top enclosure I would recomend cover 3/4 of the top with either plexi glass, glass, or something similar. You will find they have flawless sheds and it holds humidity really well.
