Re: Help me choose what snake to get

What species of rat snakes are available for you? My Russian and Japanese rat snakes are really great for handling, never flighty or defensive. My prasina, aka green bush rat snakes, are not at all...

Re: Live plants that are known to be safe for snakes?🤔

Plants in a snake's enclosure are more of a consideration of something that won't get destroyed by the snake moving around than presenting a danger to the snake. I've never heard of any plants being...

Re: Stuart Milk snake advice

I have a sub-adult Sinoloan milk snake. She stayed burrowed under her bedding nearly all the time for the first couple months. Eventually she learned that Sundays are feeding day, and started...

Re: New Rosy Boa (2 months old) Won't Eat

Did you get the boa from a private breeder or a pet store? Was it eating before you brought it home? Was it previously fed live or frozen/thawed items? What sort of setup do you have for heat? A good...

Re: Can I use a rubber tire in my enclosure?

Better to use it for a hide than a water bowl, a rubber tire with water wouldn't be easy to keep clean, or even tell when it's dirty. IME rat snakes aren't usually inclined to soak or poop in their...

Re: Should I get a BP, Corn snake, or California king snake?

Not sure what you consider "fun", but if you want a relatively good-size, active snake with a great disposition for handling you should consider either a Russian or a domestic black rat snake. Black...

Re: Thinking of adding another snake

I have 2 carpet pythons, has 3 but sold the youngest one last year. First one was a jungle/IJ cross, and has been as easygoing as a BCI from the start. Second one was the IJ, holy terror as a...

Re: Caring for an Antaresia python

I use aspen bedding for my Anterasia pythons, never heard of using sand for a substrate for those. No need to move the snake to a different container for feeding. If you do use sand though, you can...

Re: How to heat a wooden enclosure

Ultratherm heat mats are the only brand I use. Placed inside a wooden enclosure, you have to make sure they won't be exposed to excess moisture for long periods of time, but that goes along with the...

Re: Price of adult female Brazilian rainbow boa??

The price for a single adult snake is typically double the price for a baby. You can list at any price you like, may get lucky.

Re: Enclosure Size

I built a rack from plastic shelving units. The back is a sheet of plywood, with 2 very wide strips of heat tape running down to the bottom. It will hold either 2 Sterilite sweater box tubs or one of...

Re: Diamondback water snake questions

Water snakes do fine in a typical corn or king snake setup. Do provide a large water bowl, add a few rocks, and stock it with guppies every few days. The rocks will help the snake hunt down the fish,...

Re: Peat Moss Help

If you want to increase humidity cypress mulch or coconut husk in various forms are good for holding moisture, and unless you're working with eco earth less likely to make a mess of the water bowl...

Re: first snake???

Basically any sort of corn, rat, or king snake will be fairly inexpensive and easy to care for. Speckled and thayeri kings are on the small end of the size scale. Japanese rat snakes also max out...

Re: Shed Help

For stuck shed I saturate a towel with warm water, place it into a tub w/out air holes, and put the snake in. Put the lid on and leave there for an hour or two. The humidity wil loosen the shed and...

Re: My Very Bad Day .. :-(

I don't breed my boas every year, better to give the females a rest after producing a litter. Put on some weight and grow a bit more.

Re: Snakes died - advice requested

I've had a handful of unexplained deaths among various species of snakes. Mostly young ones, less than a year old. Not every snake is born or hatches completely healthy, and regardless of proper care...

Re: My Very Bad Day .. :-(

My first thought is to check the actual temps of the enclosures. I lost a couple litters of Dominican boas due to the thermostat probes not correctly regulating the temps. They were kept too warm,...

Re: Anyone communicated with AP cages lately?

I use Sterilite Stacker tubs. The lid design prevents the snake from getting between the rim and the top to escape, and the latches hold the lid securely in place. At least 5 years now, with a...

Re: Heating for grey banded kingsnake

Ya, never put the mat inside the viv. You may want to put something under the viv to allow some air circulation between the heat mat on the bottom and the top surface of the table, or whatever the...

Re: Heating for grey banded kingsnake

A heat mat would be the best option, much easier to regulate the temp than a heat lamp. The ceramic heat lamps are more suitable to basking species, rather than nocturnal snakes like kings and milks....

Re: Best beginner snakes?

California kings are more often than not nippy little buggers. Some grow out of it, some are jerks for life, lol. Corns tend to be less inclined to strike or bite. Neither one will hurt, but I tend...

Re: Cypress Mulch and keeping humidity up?

I tried mixing eco earth with the cypress for my Dominican red mountain boas. Too much of the coco ended up in the water bowls, constantly made a mess, so I just use cypress mulch. As long as you...
