Hello!! :-)

Hi :-) I'm a owner of two garter snakes and would love to hear some information on how to keep them happy and healthy :-) I would be happy to be a part of the snake community on here

Re: Hello!! :-)

Welcome to the forum. There are quite a few members who keep garters. They're a pretty easy snake to keep and care for. Tell us about your snakes and how you are currently keeping them (enclosure, temps, heating, age, feeding, etc)

Re: Hello!! :-)

They're currently 2 months old and are housed in a 10 gallon tank, average temp is about 80 degrees Fahrenheit. They had a green mat for the bottom but now have repti bark , eating worms and fish (until they are big enough for pinkies)

Re: Hello!! :-)

Garters do really well on soil. If you can dig up some of your lawn (provided you don't spray pesticides on the lawn) or get some loose leaf litter (autumn rake up) and some bagged top soil from a garden supplier... plant some grass seed if using bagged. Trust me, your Garter snakes will love it. No worries about "germs" or such. Garter snakes unlike tropical snakes like their cages a little cooler. (room temperature is fine)

Re: Hello!! :-)

Garters can also be offered cut up 1 day old pink mice mixed with nightcrawler or earth worm and or fish. Make sure to cut the pieces small enough for them to swallow. You can place that in a shallow dish for them to minimize ingestion of any particulate matter. Be sure to avoid red wiggle worms bc they contain toxins that can kill garters.
