Re: Varanus bengalensis - Kills a human

I think what the science has shown is that monitor lizards, along with many other lizard families, produce molecules of venom. Up to now, despite the hysteria and hype, there hasn't been any evidence...

Re: Savannah monitor book, ebook and Kindle

I live at the bottom of the Snake Pass. When we become a sovereign state I expect we will charge people for driving through and imprison those who drive too fast!

Re: varanus griseus

There aren't any other monitors that live in such harsh conditions: the summers in the central Asian deserts are too hot for lizards and the winters are much too cold. It's possible that the...

Re: varanus griseus

Varanus griseus is CITES Appendix 1. All international commercial trade in the species has been banned for a long time. The reasons for this have nothing to do with conservation, and have been...

Re: Savannah monitor book, ebook and Kindle

Thanks for the feedback and sorry about the Kindle version. One reason it wasn't changed is that I have received no complaints about it, only internet "rumours", hence my inquiry here. Now I know the...

Re: Prehensility in the tails of Savannah Monitors?

Could you also try to find the papers you referred to in a discussion about the diet of savannah monitors last year, and details of the facility that breeds savannah monitors on a diet which contains...

Re: Prehensility in the tails of Savannah Monitors?

Savannah monitors use their tails as a drag/anchor when descending trees, which means that although they climb trees silently they make a lot of noise on the way down. They don't like to jump and...

Re: The last dragon Special - Fruit eating Monitor

Avilon Zoo got one hatchling. The account of breeding V. olivaceus by Lutz is fabricated.

Re: The last dragon Special - Fruit eating Monitor

Much of the confusion arises over anthropomorphic ideas of fruit. We tend to think of them as soft, sugary things like grapes and bananas. The primary food of all frugivorous monitors is Pandanus;...

Re: Monitor Care & Natural History; Zoo & Pet Experiences

Indeed it has, and this is the first "serious" opposition to the ideas that I have heard since the very early 21st Century. In the mid 1990s the husbandry techniques that Frank recommends were de...

Re: Monitor Care & Natural History; Zoo & Pet Experiences

The biggest breakthroughs in monitor lizard husbandry in the last quarter century have been the recognition that access to high basking temperatures and increased humidity are necessary to allow the...

That's really interesting. Bushrat it is the same species, but that was a very old male from Shai Hills Game Reserve. If you get in touch with me I'd like to ask your help for a study of the lizards...

Re: The Savannah Monitor Diet thread..

That is the point. If you only knew about badgers from animals that were kept as pets you would get a completely warped view of its ecology and lifestyle.

There isn't any work on how Varanids...

Re: The Savannah Monitor Diet thread..

Yes, some butaan keepers have been experienced varanid breeders. In practical terms, monitor nutrition is all about fat. Mineral deficiencies are not an issue when you always coat your food in soil....

Re: The Savannah Monitor Diet thread..

Interesting stuff. I very much doubt that, in the event of mass millipede and cricket extinction, that savannah monitors could compete with the animals (primarily snakes) that are already eating...
