Re: What monitor is this?

If it's Malaysia, that'll be Varanus nebulosus.

As Stefan mentioned, they may not be a full species, so it may be Varanus bengalensis nebulosus. I haven't read the paper elevating it to a full...

Re: What monitor is this?

Nepoez, in which country were your parents when they photographed the lizard? That would distinguish whether it is Varanus bengalensis or V. nebulosus.

Here are a couple of the latter I...

Re: Some croc advice needed please

For starters, I think the enclosure is too bare and open - the croc's only choice of cover is to hide under water, but there's nothing for it to hide under there.

Two weeks isn't a long time for...

Re: Some croc advice needed please

My two immediate questions would be:

1. How long have you had the croc for?

and

2. Can you show any photographs of the setup, please.

Re: Varanus melinus husbandry (help!)

I can't recall hearing of anyone that's bred them. Loads of babies that show up in the trade, probably through the wild collection of gravid females (which is even worse than buying a wild caught...

Re: Varanus melinus husbandry (help!)

Oh, I thought you were originally planning to get melinus?

Send me a PM and I can send you Justin's email address, when the time is right. Don't panic if I don't respond right away, as I travel a...

Re: Varanus melinus husbandry (help!)

It depends on what sort of info you are after. There's a guy called Justin in Florida that breeds panoptes on a regular basis. Buying captive bred is always a better idea than wild caught.

Re: Varanus melinus husbandry (help!)

You're welcome. I'm glad you didn't take it the wrong way. Have you considered any of the species from slightly drier areas, like gouldii or even panoptes (which, admittedly, are found both in dry...

Re: Varanus melinus husbandry (help!)

I've just skimmed over this thread and read bits and pieces here and there, but have a few comments to make. I apologise in advance if I sound curt and rude, for that is not my intent. I'm just short...

Re: "Best trained Savannah monitor"

I understand where you're coming from, but the problem is that 'just yet' assumes it will happen. If it hasn't happened yet, there's no guarantee it will. Not the way things are at the moment. People...

Re: "Best trained Savannah monitor"

There's another factor here: As long as WC are available, there's less incentive to breed them in captivity. It's not a coincidence that so many Australian reptiles are available CB - Australia...

Re: "Best trained Savannah monitor"

You may have missed this bit from my earlier post:

They ALL say that they want to buy WC so they can start producing CB. They ALL fail.

At some point, someone has to say 'enough is enough'.

Re: 1.1 Crocodile Monitor (For Sale)

That saltwater crocodile is a good example. It was well within the expected maximum length for saltwater crocodiles. It was a record in that, while it was still alive, it was the largest in...

Re: "Best trained Savannah monitor"

I've seen this lame argument used to support the WC industry before, but never from a reasonably educated person. I am, to be perfectly honest, shocked and surprised. Are you seriously unable to...

Re: 1.1 Crocodile Monitor (For Sale)

As far as I know, the largest Komodo dragon was 3m, perhaps a bit more. Around 10 feet.

The record for longest monitor was apparently a Sri Lankan water monitor that was a bit over 3m. It would...

Re: "Best trained Savannah monitor"

If anything, I'm even more against WC in the hobby in places where the animals don't occur natively, such as America.

Here if WC were allowed it would just be the odd animal taken and it would...

Re: 1.1 Crocodile Monitor (For Sale)

Stephan is correct. Although the '14 feet' is often quoted, there is no reliable record of one exceeding 10 feet.

Re: "Best trained Savannah monitor"

Oh gee, I'd never thought of that before ;)

Seriously, though, I'd LOVE to house them outdoors and will do so one day, but the place I own doesn't have a back yard.

It's illegal in my state...

Re: "Best trained Savannah monitor"

Thanks! It's 2.4 x 2.4 x 1.2m

It could be much larger and they'd still use all of it. :(

Thanks for the tip! Why hasn't anyone explained this to me before. Let me try that out.

More monitor training (old video - they're much better at this now):

Re: "Best trained Savannah monitor"

I had my male lace monitor trained to come for food at one stage. I'd feed the female in the enclosure first and would then call the male over. I had to delay the reward (the food) by adding steps...

Actually, it's only 23 million.

Less the one that gets taken by a shark every year. ;)

Re: Sex determination in Varanids?

Bingo. That was exactly my point. The abuse of statistics, such as somebody trying to make a correlation between two unrelated (but perhaps, individually, perfectly legit statistics) doesn't make the...

Re: Sex determination in Varanids?

Well, you can't really play with proper statistics, but it is easy to play with people's misconceptions of statistics and that is what people with an agenda do.

Well, except that the 1 fatal...

Re: Sex determination in Varanids?

You'd have to do this x several hundred times for it to be statistically significant.

There are a lot of really interesting books (Irrationality, The Invisible Gorilla etc) on perception, memory...
