Cypress mulch is a great idea! If you were thinking of using pine or cedar shavings, then there would be issues. (Pine has lots of dust, and cedar has unhealthy fumes)

How adorable! It looks like either some sort of kingsnake or rat snake. They're harmless, so you can use a snake hook or gloved hands.
