One of the highlights of my career, for which I am grateful - caching and marking green anacondas on the the Venezuelan llanos; one disgorged a 60 pound deer! I posted in Field Herping as well; not sure which would be preferable. I've been very fortunate, thank you. It's a small field, but there are possibilities..let me know if you ever want related info.
It is blood..I've managed to avoid most bites from captives, but catching them in murky, mud-bottomed swamps is another matter. Hard to see and move - A co-worked grabbed an electric eel, thinking it was a snake, and was shocked backwards a few feet; I came up with a good sized caiman by accident, and large FW rays were very common and easy to step on (we always shuffled our feet, as stings are rumored to be excruciatingly painful).
While trying to figure which end was which on the snake pictured (she was underwater when we bumped into her), the head suddenly popped out right near my face. I grabbed for it, but my hand landed too far from the head to get good control, and she bite me. A bad infection resulted, but cleared up quickly with tetracycline, which we had on hand. Snake wound up being 17 feet long, 215 lbs.
I felt some pain upon arriving back in the states. Xrays revealed a tooth in my wrist..doctor said it was near some nerves, etc. and best to leave at this point. So I have a souvenir...
Thanks again for your interest and kind words, Frank
