Steve my Savannah Monitor is starting to get quite large and feeding him is getting pretty expensive buying mice crickets and roaches from the local pet store (Mice about $1.75, Crickets 15 for a $1 and Dubias $.50 each) so I have been wanting to start a roach colony and set up a couple pairs of breeder mice.

I have read the care sheet for Dubias on Aaron Pauling's Roaches but I like to ask here.
Also I haven't read anything on breeding mice so any information is great.

What set ups do you have if you breed roaches or mice? Any advice is welcome.

I am on a budget, Steve's cage was a little expensive because the mill I worked at wouldn't give me an employee discount because I was summer help temp.

I just received some dubias from Aaron Pauling. I got way more than was quoted and shipping was very timely. I only read the care sheet on his site as well and have never had a colony until now. In the section on his site OVERSTOCK SPECIALS there is a great deal for dubia, I suggest checking it out, I got 800+ when the site quotes 720. Either way from what I have been told get the largest amount you can afford. My set up is the exat way his site suggests. I used to breed gerbils to feed a ball python I had but do not know that I did anything special.

My advice if you want faster food is breed rats. a rat weanling is about the same size as a mouse.

If you got 3-4 female rats and a male, then just set them up in like a 55 gallon fish tank with a screen top, water bottle and dish of food, you will almost always have nests of small rats and baby rats going on.

I have 3 rat colonies, and there is almost always a new litter of rat babies to feed my herps.

Sweet, I can use steve's old cage for rats.

Also that is good to hear that site is very good with customer service.

Good advice Wayne!

I order a large quantity of frozen feeders (quail, mice and chicks). I don't want the hassle of another set critters to care for. I do breed my own Dubia and discoid roaches.
