...so today after work, I will go to City Hall and do just that. Well, technically, since my roommate also has a permit and since they only require one per household, I don't have to get mine renewed, however, I don't want to depend on his permit for Black Betty to be legal. That's why I'm getting mine renewed. Such is the hoops one must jump through in Des Moines just to keep the city happy.

I just wonder how his compares with other parts of the country or even the world.

I've been visiting the Aussie forums since I got my Woma. You should see all the crap they need to go through to keep. Forget about importing. Licences and different class license ... bleh. Oh and only native species.
Wv requires nothing.

The only restriction Iowa has is that they ban Anacondas, Retics and African Rocks. This permit that's required for anything over 6' is strictly a Des Moines thing. Funny thing about this permit. You have to take a 20 hour "big snake" class but it's hardly ever offered. That's the catch. I was fortunate enough to take advantage when a class was offered otherwise I'd still be in that catch 22. I said it before but Iowa's laws are a patchwork even in the metro. Some places allow anything the state allows while others don't allow anything at all.

Texas has great laws.....
But there are city ordinances that overrule them.
Here in Corpus Christi one cannot keep any boa, python, venomous or monitor.
Ridiculous.......No sand boas, children's pythons or BPs.......
So....I keep colubrids....and lots of them!

Freedom is an illusion. You are bound by government, currency, and religion.
Doesn't matter where you live or who you are.

No permits required in the UK as long as the animals in question are not venomous or "dangerous" (covers things like crocs :))

What is a dangerous snake and what is not?

All non venomous no matter the size are classed as "non dangerous" and all venomous are classed as "dangerous" :)

Well, it's as free as we make it. In my home state the pit bull owners just got a break. I've previously lobbied for other causes and took time off to speak before subcommittees. But a change in the right direction can be accomplished. I personally don't believe we should have to take bans on animals that don't pose a danger to the general public.
If you own a large or a venemous snake you should be politically active or donate to an organization that is.

Only Corpus Christi is that way. Texas allows almost everything.

Yep, and everyone's allowed just enough to keep us docile (for the most part).

Not a chance, sorry. A few decide for the many.
Or you should realize you're screwed where you are and move (if ____ issue is that important to you) somewhere more accomodating.

The renewed permit came in the mail yesterday so now everything is up to date. As I was looking at it plus the "dog tag" they sent me with the permit number, I noticed that number is different than last years permit number. I guess its the Citys way of making sure everything is up to date. ;)
