When you miss the prey with the strike just go ahead and bite yourself and coil some air.

Before I laugh at the hilarity of the situation, was the snake ok?

She is 7 ish ft and 16 lbs. I will wait to see when she lets go of herself. I figure damage done if any. I am not about to try to free her from herself and possibly have my hand be next. When she figures it out and is eating the prey I will have a look. I'm sure she is fine. Just not to smart.

Well she figured it out. Finally :(
Got herself good. I will sneek some polysporin on it tomorrow.

oh poor thing. :( she done this before?

Oh geez no, never get involved in a situation like that, lol. She'll figure it out eventually and there won't be any damage except for a couple of little scrapes that'll fix themselves with a moult.

One of my Bloods was chewing on himself a few times (3 separate times in total) during his last feeding. He just got himself worked up and instead of the rat he was chewing on his own body over and over and over. It's a horrible sound to hear those teeth catching on their own scales, but it's entirely too unsafe to get involved with a large constrictor that's in food mode :)

That'll help, and it goes to show how much power they use, even on themselves, and it illustrates why to never get involved in that type of situation. This is a really good example of that :)

Yup I wasn't going to mess with her. She's fine and yes she has done this before. I guess this means all rabbits from now on. To big to miss :)

No, I know you have more sense than that, but it's a good example for other folks who might think it'd be a safe thing to reach in to a large constrictor's cage and try to fix the situation. That'd be a good way to make the evening news as another statistic

I have felt her squeeze my arm hard enough to make the veins in my hand swell right up and that was just holding on. Can't imagine "the death grip". There would be no getting her off. Besides she was the moron. Not me :)
It is hard to watch your snake hurt themself. Even when you know they will be fine:(

I've seen this happen a time or two. The only one I ever worried about was a King snake. I kinda thought he might "Jabba the Hut" himself.

wow never heard of or seen a snake trying to eat itself

She thought she had the prey and the prey had her back. When she let go she turned to the prey and picked it up by the head to slide it closer. It is both funny and sad that they are that dumb. Oh well.

lol that was a great movie. I love Rick Moranus (sp?) i'm not looking that up, it's easier to just post it misspelled lol
I also loved robin hood men in tights!

Ouch! Poor girl :(

One of my burms bit themselves when she was much smaller (about 4'). She realized she missed hers, but she had a tooth stuck in her scales. I left her alone for a few minutes in hopes that she could get it out, but she seemed to have so much difficulty in the few minutes I left her alone, I was afraid she was going to harm herself even more, so I firmly held her head so she couldn't move and worked the tooth out. Not sure how she got it stuck so bad, but she didn't bleed, although she had a little bump for about 2 sheds after. Surprisingly she didn't get defensive with me when I let her go and was alot more cautious of taking her food off the tongs when I offered it again lol If she had been any bigger, I doubt I would have helped, even though her feed mode back then wasn't very strong (I've literally hand fed her). Now, I wouldn't even think about it lol. If she would have been bigger or even one of my other animals, I wouldn't have even contemplated it.

Hope your girl's boo-boo goes away quickly. Maybe she learned her lesson lol :D

Glad to hear the snake is alright.

Wise of you not to stick your hand in there. I could easily see someone doing so though -- just one of those automatic reactions. Not unlike when two dogs are fighting -- stupid as heck to get between them, but still one of those automatic reactions/impulses that one should resist.

Not sure I would call it automatic but I see what you're saying. I'm not about to get in the middle of a mastiff fight! Chihuahuas maybe? Mastiffs? Ain't no way!

What's you're feeding procedure like? I've heard of this happening before but I'm curious how the snake does this.

Seen this happen once to a Coastal Carpet Python. It eventually let go of itself and took the rat.

I have seen this happen many times over the last 20 years. Always leaves me shaking my head. Seems to be a fundamental disconnect between "yeah, I got it!" and "ouch! that hurts!".

I feed her with plastic tongs over newspaper or cardboard. She will not eat the prey until I make it move. She missed on the strike then turned to go again. When she turned she touched herself with her nose right where she had brushed against the rat. Then bingo!!!
The aftermath :(

If your snake ever does this DO NOT ATTEMPT TO HELP!!! or risk an injury. Better her back than my arm.

My reflexes are faster than my brain. I have reach in a few different times when this has happen. Have only taking one bite doing it, but it's something you shouldn't do.

The feeding before last (or maybe the one before that), Cloud grabbed the rat and started eating it curled up. I guess he was being lazy or something, but he didn't unwrap when he got to his side and just continued eating, and eventually started eating himself. He got his teeth stuck in his skin and started hissing. I grabbed some tweezers and tapped the tip his nose because he wasn't letting go, and he released himself. If he wasn't only (about) 3 feet, I wouldn't have done it. (It also helps he had food in his mouth.) Afterwards he was fine, and finished swallowing it. But then, when I went to check on him and make sure he wasn't stressed from the endeavor, I noticed him SHOVING his face through his bedding and had a mouthful of it. I wondered what the heck was his problem, cleaned out his mouth (he opened the side of his mouth as wide as it would go to help me out lol). Then, when I got to the other side, I noticed he had gotten his teeth stuck in his lip AND gums. :hmm: I tried gently poking his mouth to get him to release, no luck. So after not getting anywhere after 2 or 3 mins I left him alone to sort it out. The next morning he was fine. Still don't know how he did it.
