How far does your snake experience go?
snake man12
08-14-12, 02:19 PM
Dumerils boa, Hog Island Boa,. These two species have similar care requirements temperature and humidity being only slightly different. They are both hardy and docile snakes. Dums stay around 5 to six feet some getting seven but that is unusual. A hog island will get about the same size as a dum.

How about a dwarf boa? I have a 6 year old that's fully grown at around 5 foot

Try a nicaraguan boa. They are the smallest i believe. can be tempermental though
or peruvian long tails?

Most boas don't get a whole lot bigger that 7 ft. So I'm wonder if maybe you are looking for something with less girth vs. length?

i was looking at some nics but i was wondering how big of a cage they need, which one stay in a 40 gallon breeder?

Nics are notorious for bad attitudes. It would definetly need a viv bigger than a 40.

I think you should look for a male bci

I agree with those that suggest dumerils. They stay around that length although they can be a bit heavy-bodied, they're hardy animals, have easy husbandry, and are a docile, easy to handle animal. I got my two as rescues, and even in their poor condition, were very gentle easy going snakes. IMO, they also have a really nice pattern that's not really common.

You could keep any species of boa constructors you want in a 40g

i am not a noob..lol i was really hoping for a boa constrinctor, how about a guyana and will a hog nose stay in 40 gallon for its whole life?

Hog island you mean? And jay I know you have a lot of experience but would you put a 9 foot suri in a 40? Also dumerils are boa constrictors.
razor12345678

lol my bad, and i was talking about the brb lol,so do male bci get upto 9 feet? also do u know the care of a Peruvian long tailed boa

Can't I have a little fun?
I'll stick to my original statement, heck you could cram a anaconda in a 40g if you were determined.
To the op stay away from boas if you're stuck for space.

Ivalynfyre

that sounds much too small, considering male BCIs get 6+ feet.
You can see your snakes through tubs, and IMO they aren't an eyesore..

6ft+ is very unusual. I agree custom 4by2by2 is an appropriate size for most boa constrictor species.

It is plenty but glass aquariums are not the best choices in that that they don't hold humidity well and they don't hold temp well either as well as providing less security for the snake.

I honestly can't believe all of the terrible info being thrown out there like its a law of the universe. I have no ideas where to even begin so I will keep it basic.
Your snake needs a minimum of 1'sq of floor space for every foot of snake. So honestly a 55 gallon (48"lx13"wx18"h) is only good for a 4' snake.
I personally had a male bci that was three years old when I got him and 52". In 8 months he grew to 5.5+ feet.
There is no way he is going to build a nice 4x2x2 enclosure to $60 in Canada. The plywood will cost $45-$125 dollars alone. The vernier edging will be $10 and tempered glass is $8+ a square foot .
@op
I think this is a step you should think long and hard on. I just got a 7'+ female and she is truly an amazing snake. The downside is she is 7'+. She is calm and gentle yet she still is a danger to my family. Are you ready for that responsibility? Are you ready to pay big bucks for feeders? My girl can easily eat a 4-5lb rabbit.
As I mentioned before the caging will not be cheap. Your local pet stores are going to charge you an arm and a leg for large feeders. Are you financially ready for this? Do you want to deal with a pile of poop bigger than yours?
If you are comfortable with these questions then by all means do it! I love boas but the longer I have them the more I realize how much responsibility they are. Good luck and touch base with Trent or Jay they are our resident boa experts(IMO).

A 50 Breeder has different dimensions than a 55 allowing for more sq. ft. and you'll have to overlook the fact that I'm not familiar with the prices of Canadian lumber. Other than that I don't really think there was any "terrible" advice given to the OP at all.

I am making new enclosures next month. I don't believe I said she's not cramped at all. I think I said "not too cramped". My point was that a snake under 7 ft. would be just fine in that size enclosure. Mine gets a stretch every weekend. I haven't worked out the exact dimensions that I want yet but I'm gonna be building a few rack systems and a few big cages. In the interest of not wasting space (aka being able to house more snakes :D ) I'm gonna go with less head room and more floor space. Right now I'm thinking 6'x1.5'x2'. I should actually start a thread and get some feedback/inspiration for my "Reptile House" project.
