The purpose of this thread is to make a place where everyone can discuss and post pics about hog island boa. It seems I see three or four threads per day about hogs so instead we can post them here. I would like to start us off with a pic of my hog island but I don't get him until the end of July so I found this cool picture of one on the internet. So that's it.

He is the poster child of cute hog island boa's lol. He is so tame is weird , he will just crawl right into my hand and make a coil and watch me , and get warm of course.

Those are some good lookin' Hogs everyone! Tek, your male sounds like mine. I'll try and get some new pictures of my guy tomorrow. It's nice to see all these different nuances grouped into one post.
Okay, I got a new pic of my 2011 male to add to the thread :)

Love the pics! I had a question about caging for the Hog Island boa. I have a spare vivarium that is 38x24x19. Would that cage size be sufficient for a HIB? If it was close I was going to put in a ledge on the back wall or the back corner to give me more overall floor space. Would love any input from you HIB owners, thanks!

For a Male it should be ok mine does like to climb , though i have seen males reach 7 feet and be large so it could outgrow it but i would say you would have 5 years to make plans for a larger cage if needed. I have my 2010 3 ft male HG in a 48x24x14 and its plently big enough for him for now. i have seen some really big females too , don't always believe the description on adult snake sizes as it all depends on feeding and genetics. I always use 1.5 sqr foot of floor space per foot of snake in general .

Awesome, thanks. In the future I would love to get a stack of 4x2's just might be a bit down the road. I have looked into a few other Insular Boa's as well, but it seems finding a breeder for these is tough. Just to be sure, males are generally smaller correct?

yes for most boa's , the males are smaller. I would try kingsnake.com or faunaclassifieds to find one , I got my male from desert moon reptiles but they are 2010 babies so over 2 feet already which is good in that your dont have to worry about feeding issues or health as they are well established. I don't like dealing with babies much , lots of stress and worry about eating and husbandry. much prefer a yearling. Some other very small boas are Tarahumara Mexico boa's , Crawl Cay boa's and Caulker Cay boa's , males especially as for a island boa's go. i think a male Tarahumara would fit your enclosure thru adulthood .

So I have recently been given the opportunity to purchase 2 2012 Hog island boas for 350$ male and a female. Now I am doing much research to find out about suitable habitats, but one thing I am curious on would be if it is safe to keep both of these snakes in the same enclosure. I have a 95 gallon or 75 gallon 24”x24”x48” that I was thinking about using if it was a good idea to keep them together and the intention would be to have them breed when the time is right. Just wondering anyone thoughts and opinions on the idea.

I would highly recommend keeping them separate for many many reasons.

Dont keep snakes together , there is a fair chance one could eat the other and both would die , plus they will compete for space on the hot spots. Also a tank that large is not the best for babies. If they are 2012 then get some 32qrt to 105 qrt tubs or small enclosure until they are 3 feet or so . That price seems a bit high also , i paid 250$ for my top of the line hog male and female.

What Kat and Tek said. Housing 2 snakes together is never a good idea. Always better to be safer than sorry.

now using a tank divider would work as thats plenty of room for 2 babies for a while , but i dont like tanks for snakes myself.
its 350$ for the pair not sure if i worded that weirdly so if you paid 250 for one snake tek then i think its a fair deal. And ill probably go with the tank divider idea, the only reason I really asked this question about housing together is because I see it at pet stores all the time. I know from reading someones ball python care sheet that its not a good idea for them but I didnt know if something was different with these guys.

i paid 250 for the pair, 125$ each for top of the line lemke hog islands. i would follow a normal Red tail boa caresheet for hogs , except they like it a bit cooler , My ambeint is 78f , cool side is 73f and warm side is 88f with 65% humidity. i wouldn't go much over 90F on the hotside.

I had one for a short while. We didn't get along very well. Everytime I got him out he tried to bite me in the boob.
alright I will keep your price in mind, I thought you meant you paid 250 for 1. Which in Canada at expos I have seen and thats why I thought it was a good price
