View Full Version : Lack of Tub Space... Possible Solution?

Ok this is the situation. We dont have enough tub space for our snakes and we've been temporarily housing Gandalf, the '08 male Dum with Arwen, the bigger of the 2 '07 females together. We figure its breeding season anyway so this seemed like a short term fix. Anyway, Popeye, our '02 male Dum is horny as can br and is looking for relief in that area and Gandalf is too young. We were thinking about switch Popeye and Gandalf so that way Popeye could be with Arwen and do his thing. Problem is tub size. That rack holds 4 tubs that are 37 qt each. Another possibility is putting Popeye back in with Black Betty who is by far the biggest we have but she is in a 6' Neodesha enclosure, so there is way more room. Problem there is that he was such an eager breeder last year that she had enough of him and attacked him when she had enough. Should I try to put him back with her and see if he'll try to make his moves on her?

Snake ages and sizes:
Black Betty- '02, 27 lbs and 9 1/2' long
Popeye- '02, 10 lbs and 5 1/2' long
Arwen- '07, 9 lbs and 5' long
Gandalf the Grey- '08, 3 lbs and 3 1/2' long

I think thats all the relevant info. If I can think of more I will be sure to post it.

If you want to have baby dums and who wouldn't!! I would watch close..just to make sure you don't have a repeat of last year events.

I know I need a new rack and that will solve all the problems. In the meantime until I can come up with the funding and the right rack, I face these dilemmas. The rack I want is just like the 4 shelf AP rack I currently have, shown in the first pic. Animal Plastics is what we use and what Im thinking about is a T3 AP Cage that looks similar to the second pic. It would be great to have the funding for both but I really need to get this dilemma resolved ASAP.

I agree, which is why I am reluctant to put him back up there.

To me it wouldn't seem to hurt to see if popeye and blackbetty could get along maybe they forgot what happen last year

That would solve the space issue, as you can see but again, I am reluctant to put him up there, all things considered.

Yeah she is almost twice his length and almost three times his weight.

The other problem is that they might get along! If you don't have enough space now, a bunch of babies is sure not going to help.

exwizard

Dum babies can always be sold and I will get another rack soon. I was just trying to come up with a short term temporary solution in the meantime. Our new roommate Brian does have a baby rack so I dont think that would be a problem if it ever got to that.

Ok for now, I will keep Popeye by himself and Arwen will be by herself since there is not enough room for the two of them to be together but Gandalf the Grey will be with Miss Piggy since both are younger and smaller. Gandalf is an '08, 3 lbs and 3 1/2' long and Miss Piggy is an '09, 2 1/2 lbs and 3' long. Maybe next weekend I will try putting Popeye back up to Black Bettys Neodesha and see what happens.

You could make a melamine rack for temp use?

exwizard
02-05-12, 07:41 AM
I am severely wrench and hammer challenged. I wish I had the skills necessary to get that done. Im thinking about going to Animal Plastics next week after I get paid and just ordering a new one. It will take about 5 weeks but apparantly that is less time than waiting to find one on Craigslist.

There is a guy with a 7 tub 41qt ap rack in wyoming on CL but he wont get back to me....

Aw it would be a good experience for you, measure twice cut once. I'd use a drill instead of hammer and wrench and if you make all your measurements ahead of time they can cut it all for you at the store. I think you might be able to get pre-measured racks lists on the internet or someone here could help. I think if they make it I would go for half inch melamine instead of quarter so its easier to drill in the center for shelves and hopefully it wont split as much or any. I really want a 10 tub rack from AP but I'd rather extinguish some small debt first.

AP is right here in the Des Moines metro so it will be easy for me to pick it up once its finished. They do have a backlog though. I understand your need to reduce debt. We are in that same mode as well.

Its all over my head and my frustration level is too low. I dont like starting anything I cant finish and Im afraid if I get started on this I will be in over my head.

You know the real solution to this dilemma is to not have more snakes than you can properly house.

You could get one of this to put him in. Shipped they're about $55.00 size wise they are 52.3" L x 20.31" W x 14.3" H.

You know what...

I have already stated that Im not getting more snakes so that is NOT the issue. My issue with you is your constant negative judgemental attitude and I reject you and your attitude. I was looking for solutions to what I am facing now, not judgement from you or anyone else. Its attitudes like this that almost ran off a new member recently and even made me reluctant to even post this thread because I saw the potential for it to happen here but decided to risk it anyway. If you have advice for a solution Im ready to hear it, if its criticism or judgement then take it somewhere else because its not helping to fix this dilemma I am facing now. Shoulda woulda coulda doesnt help anything as its only counter-productive. At least the others whove replied are actually trying to help.

Wayne, please close this thread as Ive already decided on what Im going to do and I dont want to bear the brunt of any more judgement from Aaron S. If I hear from him again along these lines, he will be blocked. Thank you for anything you can do.

You request to have something deleted because I chose to express my opinion which happens to not be the answer your looking for. So if noone wants to agree with you we all have to delete threads? Funny.

My solution? Sell the snake you can't house or go buy a new enclosure. It's rather simple. Instead of trying to keep everything in multiple housing situations go buy one or sell the snake.

Are you gonna block people because they don't agree with you? If it matters, I agree with Aaron 100%; don't buy more animals than you have bins for.
Problem solved.
Common sense.

in the meantime, do you have an extra heat source?? I always have an UTH or 2 hanging around. If so, just go get one of those 6 dollar tubs, drill holes, leave the top on with weight. and put it on top of your dresser.

it's what I do when I get a rescue snake dropped on me, I can set it up in the bathroom as quarantine, or I guess, house an extra snake for a while if I had too!

Gungirl

I agree with Aaron and Mykee..

I always have at least 1 extra tub, a 10 gallon tank and a 40 gallon breeder tank open for rescues or random buys. I also have extra thermostats, flex-watt and everything else just in case.

Truth of the matter is he currently has a snake without a viv. Maybe he shouldn't but I personally have done that myself. So instead of giving worthless "advice" about not having more snakes than vivs lets try and give him some sound advice and ideas.

The best advice is to go buy a tub and everything you need to make the situation right.

DeesBalls
02-05-12, 07:21 PM
yes, go grab a tub ($10) and a water dish, some hides. and a UTH.. maybe $40 at most... temporary problem solved...

as long term, i would look at building/buying a rack :)

I appreciate all the advise Ive gotten after Mykee seconded Aarons worthless judgement of woulda shoulda coulda. There is a big difference between advice and criticism.

Frankly I dont want to start another debate with someone, we all know who, who the only way he feels better about himself is to place himself high on his horse and looks down on others and casts judgement. Im sorry it has come to this but Im done with this forum. This is the last post you will hear from me. Aaron can cast his judgements all he likes now that I will be gone. I dont care what he thinks anyway, theyre MY pet snakes, not his. Have a nice life everyone and its been a slice.

Boo hoo. So sad.

I gave advice. Either sell the snake or buck up and buy an enclosure. Don't go tiptoeing around the ONLY two options by talking about communal housing. That's the issue I have.

Just because I don't sugar coat it doesn't make it wrong.

Wizzard, i hope you dont leave, dont let this ruin the forum for ya... Mykee and AAron give their advice and sometimes they do come off as "rude", but they are usually right...

their advice.. "dont by more than what you can house'... great advice, but not for this situation...

"buy another enclosure".. great advice... also what i said and even a few other people.. doesnt need to be a 200 dollar show case, just a cheap tub..

their advice is always spot on.. them and a few other people on this forum have all helped me out ALOT! if i left, my snakes/bearded dragon may not be doing so well...

just think twice before you leave us.
