Hey all, I'm a newbie an this is my first post! I'm here cause I caught my two carpets locked lastnight... Whoop! Will be my first snakes I've bred. Have a few questions, first of all they live together... Will this be a problem, can I leave them together? Also she is very young and only weighs around 500g!! Guessing she'll be ok right? Also would you rush to get an incubator or let her do her thing? I've read about getting a box making a hole in the top and putting about aan inch of dampish moss in it... Can anyone give me some concrete yes and no's?? Thanks for reading, justin.

I've never heard of anyone Successfully breeding a female carpet under 1300 grams. Most prefer to breed them at 2400+ grams.
The egg size alone might kill her. Separate them.

Welcome to the forum.. I would separate them and stop breeding until you have done a bit more research to ensure your snakes safety and health.

Separate them and do a lot of research. How old are they?

P.S. hello and welcome to our zoo.

Hello, I wouldn't recommend "breading" any snakes.:p

i agree with stephan

breeding a female thats too small can lead to health issues, even death

her getting egg bound would be my first worry mate

i'd seperate them right away

re breeding (for future refference)
after the males done his job,its best to seperate him from the female.leaving her in her own tank, set up with a nesting box.

with a bit of luck your female will not be gravid and you get the male out quickly

She's eating small rats and is around 4 foot, when I last weighed her about two months ago she was 550g fattest part of her body is about an inch and a half... Also she is cb09! Must be her first sexual cycle. He is around 5.5 foot and 1000g, cb07 on medium rats. I'll move her to a tub tonight, surely in nature she would breed though? Thanks for the replys!

Noone else has asked so i will bite the bullet - why would you keep a male and female together when you werent intending them to breed?

1 lock does not mean she is prego, I make sure I see at least 3-4 locks or them ignoring eachother before I get my hopes up. but there is always a chance.

Well I do intend to breed them! but never thought she would until she was bigger, as I said I'm new to snake breeding. I thought once she was mature enough to breed she would be big enough... They must breed at that size in nature? No? Obviously though you lot know your snakes, so I will have her in a tub as soon as I get home, then I'll source her a private viv saturday, hoping she isn't pregas now... Jus gave the details to my local reptile dealer and he said wait a year, also if she is her growth will be stunted but she should be ok. Well everyone has to learn somehow. They was locked for about an hour! Thanks everyone, I'll keep you updated!-)

Most guides say to breed carpets (females) as low as 1500g, I wouldn't advise it under 2000g. I know some people that bred really small males to large females, but the other way around tends to be fatal.
Best of luck.
If you witness an ovulation, make sure to take her to the vet as soon as she starts her second swell, or inverts to have the eggs drained.

Just weighed them and called the place I bought her, they had a big meal last night. She is 775g and he is 1600g. Also she is definately cb09... Also her last third looks a little swollen! She doesn't like the tub! So I definately need to have the eggs removed if she is??? What a nightmare, I'll call my vet when I'm positive she is if need be! Well I'm glad I came here, I'd be distraught if I lost my lola... So would my mr ij jerri... Thanks.

She has a diameter of around 40mm, closer too 50mm at the moment due to the feed...?

Step One - individual housing ASAP (should have been research but its too late for that already).
Should only be togterh for breeding thats it!

Also anyone suggesting breeding a Carpet of ANY subspecies at 1500g is NOT WORTHY, far too small & likely far too young as well..
Females should be given at least 4 years to properly mature & you will find even the smallest IJs will end up far larger than a measly 1500g
I would not suggest breeding a Ball Python at that weight let alone a Carpet Python.
There are some seriously LOW STANDARDS getting passed around by people whim should know better & others that do not know better are accepting this ridiculous advice & going with it.
Most of it is coming from, thats right you guessed it morph breeders, funny how that works, Mark

If it tapers down in the next day or so which I expect to it, its called an Ovulation. Its a bad thing in a carpet python that size, probably fatal if you don't get a vet to step in. Wait for the second swell I'd guess about 30-45 days from now (Shaun, please step in on that estimation as I'm not the carpet guy) then book an appointment with the vet Fast!
