I'm not experienced with monitors. But was this your first lizard? Probably not the best choice. However there's a few experienced monitor owners.

waters do "tame" tolerate people more easily than a nile but not all will and you could infact end up with a "monster" of a lizard that wont let you near him. also dont bother him while he is hiding thae trick is to let them come to you, when he come to you dont grab him let him ivestigate you, go to youtube and watch MDFMONITOR he is really good with his monitors and lets them be monitors not "puppy dogs" but he uses alot of food/treats to gain trust with his monitors Good Luck

Read this: The Savannah Monitor, Varanus exanthematicus – Taming and Handling (http://savannahmonitor.org/taming/)

I know it is specifically for savs but the same principles apply. You should actually read that entire website and follow it. Anyone that knows what they are doing will just repeat this info from the website.

That breed of monitor can be kind of shy but if you give him time and let him come to you itll work out. If hes hiding dont go in and flip over his hides because your gonna stress him out. Thats wanna of the biggest reasons captive monitors die is stress. Just use food and treasts to build up a relationship with him and he might just get to trust you enough to let you handle him. Good luck!!
