@PythonBoa: Why because of its apperance? or its nature?

Gaboon Viper right? Love that head of theirs and generally fat body :)

Oh no you didn't. Had to make me jealous, huh? Has it snuffed at you yet? How big and old is it? So gorgeous and so much attitude. Just hone your agility and recognition skills because they have a good eye and are a one shot biter and they rarely miss.

Very nice! Just be real careful. If you ever watch Animal Plants "Fatal Attractions" i swear on that show it's always a Gaboon Viper that does venomous snake owners in. They maybe short and fat, but the hit like a shot out of a gun. Like Blood Pythons.

Anyway beautiful Gaboon can't wait to see more pictures.

Just thought of a question what snake does have the fastest strike?

Gabbies are one of the only hot that I ever worked with that scared the crap out of me.
"they hit like a shotgun" was more then accurate.
That and if you get tagged, and get antivenom instantly. There will still be BAD necrosis.

Black mombas can reach top speeds of 10-12 mph (16-19 km/hr) in short bursts over level ground

fast strike (1/8th of a second from start to finish).

"from a strike position, to strike and envenoming their prey, and back to strike position again, in as little as 0.13 of a second"

death adder FTW

@Marionsclan: hahaha =] yes!! I cant imagine what you would have said if i got Mr. Brown.

@Stehpanbakir: Yea i feel the same.. but its a big but much needed step for me..

@RandyRhoads: I wish....sigh...

And just for everyone to know, he is not even a yearling yet born in '10, he about 3/4's a foot long.. He is very vocal and probably pretty stressed so ill take some more pictures in a week or so. Thanks everyone for the comments.

Working with hots is tricky. I've never been tagged because of my error but even then I've come close.
Some snakes look like they are content, and have no desire to tag you, then they fly at your face in an instant.

very tricky... but very rewarding.

At least one thing is for sure, Gaboons are out to get you as soon as you open the door. And they don't just strike at you, they mean to kill. So that is something you can always count on. ;)

My fav Hots in the world, I would love to work with them but husband said i can never get near a hot snake.

@Jenn06 & Stephanbakir: They are one of my favourites also. He is probably the last venomous snake i will ever buy. Ive worked with snakes more dangerous than, but i dont think i will ever actully own anything more dangerous than this.. I always wanted a Cobra, i talk about getting one, but i know i probably never will. Even with trap box's its still a really huge risk working with Cobra's... Any Elapids at that. I have a friend that is suppose to be giving me a Dusky Pygmy Rattlesnake when i get home, i may or may not take it but if i do it will be the last venomous snake i own for along time.

Yeh, I've worked with some nasties, including puffs, but I'm probably only going to own a mangrove pair, a fwc pair and a king cobra (If Kayla keeps naggin)

hahah it goes from Mangrove to FWC to King Cobra hahah. Its really difficult to work with these as adults from what ive heard. Never worked with them. They had 2 very young ones for sale here $500 a piece, Its so hard to get there food around here though, i dont think they sold. With a trap box its pretty straight forward with any species you use it with. I always recomend one with any Elapid. Hooking a 16ft King Cobra that gets alerted by something is not worth it...

stephanbakir
07-28-11, 05:29 PM
Honestly, working with kings was fun, the only one I worked with is 11 feet. That bing said feeding them is a pain, you need a large snake, normally a corn or 2, and you feed them 2-3 large mice/small rats, then kill them and forcefeed another couple then feed the stuffed corpse to the snake... Long job but rewarding.

Wow what an amazingly beautiful snake. I'm in awe, how does one handle a snake like that? As people have been saying "hot" snakes. In the picture where he is getting water he looks very content and something I would just want to pick up.

A gaboon viper bite SUCKS. A hot snake is a venomous one, and you should never "handle" a venomous snake.

Thank you very much Morgan, i think he is stunning as well. Handling is done with multiple snake sticks, tongs, or trapboxes. Or a combination of these, and only done when needed to properly maintain the animal. He may look sweet in the picture but when your right infront of him, even with his small size he puts on quite a show vocally... He lets you know he is not excited about your current plans to move him lol. Thanks again for taking interest.:)

Gaboons are soo amazing. I love the velvety look to their scales. But they are LOUD, unpredictable things. I doubt I'll ever have the cojones to own one. But I can ogle your pics! :)
