figured i would start a monitor pics thread, get out your camera's and take some new updated pics for us to check out. to start things off this is a bunch i took today of Yoshi my sav, if you remeber the last time i posted he was just a wee little guy, just a few short months back :) the pics are taken through the front plexi glass so they look a little off, but it turned out looking pretty cool any way. cant wait to see all of your updated pics. :3eyes:

not exactly sure, I have had him 9 months and i got him at about 4-5 inch or so. he never hisses or tail whipe, no aggression at all, and does not care about and pets or people he comes right out of his cage or right to the glass, very inquisitive, But, everything is food, so he is non stop trying to take a bit at anything, specially my hands the little bugger, in time that will go away as he gets older.

hehe ya yoshi did try lol But tank knows he going to do it because yoshi follows him around trying to eat him all the time you can tell how Tank had his head cocked to the side a little :P he was waiting for it, but tank want so desperatly to be friends with him. I would never let them hurt each other, im always right their to stop yoshi. Tank tries to get him to play, you know the way dogs do it, go down with the front legs with the back legs still standing and pounce a little side to side and run off. but yoshi is just chasing him to eat him lol they are both stupid :)

I want to buy a video camera just for funny animal stuff like this, yesterday i was chopping up some nuts and one hit the floor and the 3 dogs were mooching of course, well tank grabs it before i noticed, but he knows if he tries to chew it up he will be busted and ill remove it, so he tries to sneek off with it in his mouth and avoid eye contact with me, which was the dead give away, look over and the other 2 are looking right at me as tanks got his head down walking off, so i grab him and sure enouph he was hiding it in his mouth trying to get to a place where he can eat it lol i had to get him a treat he could eat after that as well as the other 2 :)

Looking very good gentlemen! i was was close to getting a peach throat before i decided to get yoshi, but the guy wanted Way too much for it, it wasnt even worth offering him a fair price, and that tegu is sweet, that was the other option i was considering as well. maybe one day :P
Grimleo
07-12-11, 07:39 PM
Peach throats are pretty pricey either way, I think. :Wow:
I also plan on getting a tegu! I will probably get mine from Bobby Hill once I make it there. But the one project I want to start before anything else is raise a couple or trio of Spiney Tailed monitors. I have a buddy that is waiting for his buddy to hatch a few out(which is SOON) before I can snatch 'em. =) I am very excited for that.
Dehlida
07-12-11, 10:10 PM
My next goal once I move houses is to set up a few 1.2 trio of ackies. Extremely popular, maintaining value, and absolutely hands down the best starter monitor.
Peach throats aren't too bad for price. I can generally pick them up between $200-$300, which is what most indicus complex animals seem to run. Then again, WC don't fetch a huge price tag, I'd imagine my CBB indicus monitors to be somewhere in the $500-$550 range when I hatch them out.
Grimleo you see the torch monitor Ben is auctioning off right now? If it wasn't for the fact they where brought in illegally as "morphs" of V. melinus I'd probably be all over them, especially at such a low price. That monitor is worth easily $1800-$2000, and it's only at $650.

Man, Great looking monitors everybody..... Do they eat ducks? LOL!!!!!

07-13-11, 10:14 PM
Agreed on the ackies, Dehlida. I am SO excited about getting mine.
I believe mine was a wild caught juvenile, but the man I got her from takes absolutely amazing care of his entire collection of reptiles. I'm happy I was able to take her from him. Anyway, for either peach throats or mangroves I am guessing if you are able to produce some captive babies they will be snatched up pretty quick even at prices like that. Have you paired your VIndicus yet?
I had no idea about the torch monitor. That's really interesting though. What a catch that would be.
Just about to grab a juicy earth worm.

And heres is his acrobatic standing on his tail routine, he does this all the time when he sees me infront of his cage, the camera was on his cage so i snapped these off as i let him out and put my work stuff away, untill he was finished exploring and went back in his cage for a nap.

I must say, Yoshi and Chomper (Both of them) make it AWFULLY hard for me to decide between a Tegu and a Sav...both species seem like they just have SO much personality!! I know I'm going to end up with one eventually (a ways down the road), but I'm certainly far from sure which
And Freebody, super-kudos for keeping him healthy! Same to you, Jay...pretty much every youtube video I see of Savs feature scaly frisbees lol. It's nice to see active, in-shape animals :)

i credit my savs health to a full insect diet dubia roaches with multi vits powdered on, and now he gets 50% snails, which he really seems to enjoy. he does not get to eat as much as he wants, and he eats every other day, some times i feed him 2 days in a row if hes lucky. if not he would be fat even on the best diet :) thx blind, i hope you get either one, sav was my first choice followed by a close 2nd with the tegu. and yes they are full of personality, if thats what you want to call it lol i call it trouble lol jk they are great pets for an experienced herper with the will to learn such as yourself :)
Here is some more for you.....

Hey Freebody, the pics are great! These guys are really amazing animals to have, so much fun. And Im not trying to be harsh or overcritical man, so please dont feel like this is a personal attack or anything. Its just that I would feel remiss in not mentioning it, as it will absolutely come up in the future in a bad way. You need to get your guy on more soil. He needs to be able to burrow, as its absolutely essential to their ability to regulate their bodily functions. I know you probably have the humidity of the air in the enclosure at the right levels and the lights are inside the enclosure and all that, but its still essential to give them the ability to burrow. Again, not trying to be harsh in what is a very fun thread, honestly just trying to be helpful.

thx everyone. i agree he needs more dirt now, when i originally put the soil in their was almost double what their is now, and he also has grown 3-4 times the size, but all the spot cleanings and so much dirt everywhere after he comes out everyday, its dwindeled down slowly, and easy thing to overlook i guess, i got a few bags of dirt and sanld in the shed too, I just need to go out back and put it in, in which case ill do right now while its fresh in my head. Thx for the good eyes :) however, in this cage i wont be able to give him a proper amount, but in his forever home i plan to build him most likley this year, as hes growing fast, will have the 8-10" of good packable soil, more if i make it outside. still up in the air.

Adult savannahs need 18-24" of burrowable substrate. I'd recommend building to accomodate for that.
On an unrelated note, you have leachies?
Freebody
02-02-12, 06:28 PM
ya, thats why im really leaning towards the mega expensive, but perfect outside cage, so i can really give him what he needs. im thinking of building each wall with a 2x4 frame, insolated with plywood on each side, so i can build it and take it apart easy, ikea style, if need be. with a big insolated house window. make it 8x8x4, with a 24" sand/soil box under it, maybe a shelf he can bask on mid cage. got it planned in my head , but never really priced it or drawn it up. building it is easy, getting off my lazy behind and actually doing it is another story lol, and thx chuck, i was just watching you yellow anaconda video again, seen it a sec ago n a thread here and had to watch it again. ill post 2 vids i just took, after i added the 30L of soil and 15l sand to yoshis cage just now, its all i have, but it put it upto about 3-4 inches now. a had to come back and edit this in, Yes i still have 2 leachies. neither are pure local.

02-02-12, 06:39 PM
How are you planning on climate controlling it?
Freebody
02-02-12, 06:47 PM
i will use a herp stat, hooked up to heat lamps, being outside, i will use multiple lights as to not worry about freezing him during the winter months if a light blew out. it wont be hard at all. the only thing i dont like is, during the cold, opening and closing the cage daily for cleaning and stuff, maybe build it like a shed, with a walk in door would be a better plan and use parabolic heat dishes. but that would be twice the cost, and only taller so not any better for yoshi at all, just more convenient for me. maybe run heat cord under the soil to help it stay warm.
BarelyBreathing
02-02-12, 07:07 PM
Putting an enclosure outside in the elements, especially in winter, isn't a very sound idea. I've actually seen it before, and we aren't nearly as far north as you are. If you do plan on building it outside of the house, I would HIGHLY recommend you build an insulated and climate controlled shed or outbuilding around it.
Freebody
02-02-12, 07:15 PM
ya, thats what i mean, it will be build the same way a house is built 100%, just 8x8x4. :) Im hoping to buy a place with a garage i can build the cage in like you said, not only is it much safer, but i wont have to build a pitched roof with shingles and tar paper and all that stuff i have never actually done. but if not, i will make certain, everything is good to much hotter and much colder outside temps as far as my insolation requirments go.
BarelyBreathing
02-02-12, 07:30 PM
Okay, I don't think I was understanding you before.
Freebody
02-02-12, 09:11 PM
ah kk, ya it will be just like the walls of your house, but done so that each wall is a complete sealed and insolated unti, and ill screw them all together after, ie all the walls together, screw it on the dig box, screw the pre made roof on top of it all, that way, its not all nailed together, their will be extra wood where its not really needed, but when its desembled, the insolation, will be fully enclosed. good thinking eh :P
BarelyBreathing
02-02-12, 09:40 PM
The enclosure would have to be inside of a climate controlled area, on top of that, the enclosure itself would have to be climate controlled. You need to have an area where you can walk into out of the cold, and not have your animal exposed to that breeze.

I took this right after I added some more soil and sand, he came out when i opened the cage, had a look around at the soil bags, then went back and sat under his heat light as i added all him soil watching me closely lol he didnt move until i called him off at the start of the vid, he didnt play in it at all yesterday, but at work today he dug a couple holes. need to get some more tomorow. enjoy, oh ya, uploaded the video at 5 am this morning before work, and spelt my own pets name wrong LOL i wonder if i can fix that on youtube. hmm ill have to check.Yoshy, my sav monitor - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D5SYxMVmXvI&feature=youtu.be)

OK... For the record, I am aware that there is not really enuff dirt, Thats why once a week i rearrange the interior to at least give him one end where its enuff for him to dig, I have also since sealled the majority of the leaks so now it hold humidity fantastically.

He's also borrowing Houdini for a while to introduce new blood to his breeding group, and same with Mr. Hissy Pants. Those two will eventually come back to me.

hey just out of curiosity how is the odor with savs? is there a strong odor? and is their maintanence hard. like for example feeding, cleaning, handling to keep docile etc. also monet wise how affordable are they. I am more of a snake guy but i have always been interested in savannah monitors. i like their prehistoric and tough build. I once owned a green iguana but it was very unrewarding having to deal with aggression, constant pooping, picky eating, and needing constant attention.

Agree. On top of this, monitors are more expensive to keep, can be more agressive, are pickier eaters that require live food, need more space...
