I have a 3 1/4 foot long carpet. My tank right now is a 20 gallon high. For bedding i am using the moisture-hold wood shavings. Believe its called repti-rite it has a king snake on the front. I have a driftwood piece that rises up about half way to the top of terrarium. Coming off this i have a vine that goes around pretty much the whole enclosure, dipping and turning randomly but with the high point right beneath my lamps. For heating i have a zoomed double dome with two 75 watt bulbs, one white one red and a strip thermometer stuck in the middle of the glass towards the top. A small waterdish and a hide cave on the cool side tops it off. (there is a place to hide under the log on the warmer side.) I have been keeping both lights on in the day and just the red one at night, with resulting temps at about 84 degrees and 76 degrees respectively. Does this sound good? Any constructive criticism or suggestions always welcome. THANKS!

What measurement standard would you use in place of gallons?

Feet and inches, width x depth x height?

a superb guide to dimensions...

Standard Tank Sizes (http://www.anapsid.org/resources/tanksize.html)

To me, that seems smallish.. 24 x 13 x 17 Inches.

the only thing i can think of is the thermometer might want to invest in a digital one i read some bad things about those stick on ones

That does seem pretty small, climbing height is rewuired for carpets, we put our yearling straight into hks adult size viv and he used every inch of the space available.

We went with a cage that is taller than it is wide, our jcp spends half his time in a floor level hide and the other perched in some branches we put in there.

Yeah, 20G Tall is small for a 3'+ snake. You want it so that snake can stretch out and only take up 2 of the sides at most.

I've got my 1yo ~2.5' JCP in a 55G - 48"Lx13"Dx20"H. Like the others said they spend a pretty equal amount of time on the ground and climbing. I've got a branch going from lower right to upper left and a bunch of fake vines and foliage for her to hide in. It's a little big for her now, but she's got plenty of places to hide and usually hangs out under the heat lamp on the branch.

Check Craigs list, I've bought several 55G's for ~$50. Petco also normally puts their aquariums on sale once a year for $1/G.

So i got a new tank 36x18x24 and my snake is doin great. Fed her last nite after putting her in new home. Got my temps regulated at about 84 degrees warm 78 degrees cool side. 3 hides and plenty of climbing apparatus. This tank is definitely a better fit for her. Also upgraded to a digital thermometer. Much more accurate. Thanks for all the input!

imo your temps are great

the only thing i picked up on was your substrate

csrpets have no specific humidity requirements also be carefull of what type of wood shavings is in the substrate as pine can be lethal to carpets

cheers shaun

My bedding is 100% natural tropical red cypress. Is this ok?
