I don't know if I have a case of mites, or if they are just black scales... I only notice them on my 2 bp... I'm creaking out... here are a few quick.pics to show you what I mean... my phone isn't working so I cart upload now...

Could some one please post some pics of what they look like!??!?! I tried to search, but with no luck...

Thanks!

The easiest way to tell, small specks no bigger than pepper from a pepper shaker that move.

You can stroke a snake with mites and see them on your hands, moving tiny black specks equals mites.

I have seen mites so thick the sucked all the blood from the host snake and killed it.

Click to see everything better. All those little black things (including on person) is mites.

Oh my, they are butt munching that poor snake.

I usually have the utmost respect for life, but snake mites are one species that I would actually like to see extinct.

May I use that photo for a guide to help others?

Go ahead randomly found on an extensive search. And I was surprised to see them in the butt as well. Poor snake.

I know there isn't anything funny about this, but reading this quote I couldn't help but laugh.

But I agree, poor snake, and I hope the best for the OP's snake as well!

it looks like natural black pigmetation in the scales and part of your snakes pattern

some of my carpets have it going on also in green tree pythons it's reffered to as mite phase gtp's its all part of the pattern mate

cheers shaun

My BP has speckles but when you look real close and hard you can tell that they are just scale marking, admittedly i did try to pick one of at one point thinking it was a mite but it woudlnt come off as it is just his markings!

I would get him out and wipe him down with a slightly damp piece of kitchen towel, it he has mites you will see them on the towel.

One of the easiest to prevent things we encounter as snake keepers.

Never introduce a new animal to a reptile collection until you have kept the new animal in a separate room for a while to make sure the new animal is not a mite carrier, always wash your hands and take off any long sleeve shirts upon arriving home from handling unknown reptiles, this includes pet stores! if you handle a snake anywhere but your own collection, always wash up before going near your own pets.

it's so much easier to avoid mites than to deal with them after you have them.

they are on your hands in that first pic?

Pretty sure that was an example pic that was found on the web.

Personally i wouldnt want to use any treatments near my animals if it is unnecesary, would only treat if there was a high suspicion that mites were present and from the various posts it seems you would be 100% sure they were about.

thats what i may do, this whole situation has me a little worried. lol. but no mites, i had them both out tonight and my older one is soaking alot, but also in blue... so she always soaks when she sheds!!

that isnt me in the 1st pic, that is an example off the web, just to clarify...

I just treat all new substrate with provent-a-mite with every cleaning. Haven't had a problem since I picked up a can and it's lasted forever. I don't know how others feel but it works great for me...:crazy2:

Good to hear! I'm late on this one, but pastels sometimes have black "freckles" on their lateral pattern. Here's the only photo I had handy, but if you look closely, you can see the "freckles." (She has a LOT more).
