View Full Version : Nile Monitors
it's funny how perceptions change-though commonly available Niles were considered an animal that you should stay away from-which is true still if you are not experienced. But many keepers are after keeping a number of other species-finding them to be their favorite. With slow unforced interaction on the lizards terms-less problems are associated with their nasty temperment reputation.Where i come from in western Canada, and i know in Florida they can't be kept-but can you guys share some of your Nile experiences

I've been keeping my nile for just over a year now. I have 4 monitors at the moment, but have worked with several others. The first problem about niles- is the fact they are so cheap and easy to get. These monitors seem naturally more defensive than most others I've kept, although if you compare say a mangrove and a nile- the nile will bite and whip, the mangrove will defecate all over you just a difference in defense.
I would say the nile has probably been my most rewarding captive, she was absurdly defensive when I first got her, but a year later she accepts food from my hands, is handle-able, can come out and explore, and is awesome to interact with and watch. They are easy to take care of, however frankly unless someone has experience with other monitors, I do not under any circumstances recommend them.

A special permit is required by New York state to posses one.
I have a nosy neighbour who sent the code enforcement officer to my house once because of Chomper.
the rumours in my town are that we keep giant pythons, vipers and alligators in my house.
I love it.. never have to worry about break ins.
