For the first time ever Jim the JCP let me put my hand in his viv without striking!! He came to my hand and sniffed it then moved away, when i touched him he spun round on me but without the immediate strike! Result!! Given a bit more time i hope to be able to actually pick him up with no biting......
Congrats! Maybe 6-8 weeks from now he'll start slithering up your arm when you open the viv...

JCP - Jungle carpet python?
Aww that's amazing! Mine has yet to let me do that. If i walk by she strikes at the glass, changing her water is a real hassle!

Correct. I'd work with her every other day, except after feeding. She will likely calm down after some time.

I only work with mine a couple of times each week, letting him settle in between seems better for me and him.

Mmm I worked with mine from March till September every third day and she only got worse and worse. Now that i'm away at university and couldn't take her with me my parents are stuck looking after her and they really don't like my reptiles to begin with. So as sad as it is I am trying to find her a nice new home where somebody will have more time for her and hopefully better luck :)

Congrats!
My female JCP has only bitten at me once and that was after she ate. She is still very jumpy but has not struck at me for a good month now :)

i have personally found that my jungles were the most p[syco of all my carpets
after speaking to other morelia breeders the conclusion we all reached was that hatchling jungles seem the most defencive and bitey of all the carpets we have worked with
good on you rob for taming the beast that is jungle...!!
cheers shaun

i dont know about you rob but it was more the fright caused by the speed they hit you at that made me jump rather than the pain they inflicted:yes:
percivierance and a lot of bites = calm carpet
well 90% of the time
i worked with a jungle for 18 month before finally conceding he was clinically nuts.....!!!
good work mate
cheers shaun
My JCP seems to enjoy being held, and likes to explore the "soft warm tree". However...
Cleaning up poo? That's a biting.
Picking me up? That's a biting.
Changing my water? That's a biting.
Walking past my cage? That's a biti...*thump*
Making sudden movements? That's a biting.
Making slow movements? That's a biting.
I don't mind the bites, but I'm glad she's not getting much bigger.

That's hilarious!!! As long as my JCP has something to keep her occupied (i.e., trying to get onto the clothes drying rack, the bookshelf, the top of her cage, etc.) while I'm holding her, she is fine. Else, NOM! It doesn't matter if I move like a slug or a gazelle, she assumes the (S) position and does not hesitate to strike!
I've noticed that her senses, be they sight, thermal and vibratory detection, or some combination, are much more acute than any of my other snakes. She can detect the most minuscule movement from meters away....truly amazing creatures these Morelia!

Well done mate, i must be lucky with Samola, she never strikes unless its a rat lol .... she hissed at me once.
Can i ask you something Rob, see since the weather has changed she has went into her hide and i`v never seen her in around 2 weeks.
Should i just leave her alone and should i offer her a rat while she`s like this ?

Personally i dont think my jcp would EVER refuse food, heis my garbage disposal and eats anything left over after the rest have finished. I would be tempted to offer it anyway.

Glad your JCP is calming down, Rob. Any snake can take a lot of time and patience to tame. Some never calm...I have a 7 foot RTB that is just pure evil..she bit me in the face (my fault..let down my guard) and slams her cage door whenever I walk by. She's gorgeous, but dang she's mean.

Iam sure you will win that jungle over in the end, they can be the most highly strung of the carpet complex. but the bites are probably defensive nips, and why not, how frightening having a big hand bearing down on it. I used to interact with mine(and all my animals as regular as required) once they realise the biting is not a deterent, they usually resort to flight, which is a good time to start gentle handling, let the animal glide from hand to hand, keep your movements slow and controlled, always supporting the snake, if it bites hold it at least a few minutes longer before placing it gently back in its viv,if the snake trusts you to hold it, you,ve got to trust the snake not to bite.... they are all different but there are very few who, with patience and gentle regular interaction especially when reared from young become a reasonably tractable animal. Always remember a snake is a snake, and at times will behave like one:)

I expect to be bitten for the rest of mylife, just hoping to get to a point where its not everytime the viv gets opened!! ;)
Rob, I'm guessing you have some very large hands creating very large heat signatures....your JCP probably is just getting a little defensive due to the sheer size of the heat signature opening the viv!
I have a similar problem....sometimes I "chill" my hands prior to removing my JCP and I seem to have a 50-75% success rate compared to going in "hot".

I do have large hands, cant even buy gloves!, may try cooling them next time.....
They need to start making XXXL gloves!
The last time I went in "hot", she nailed me 2 or 3 times. Went in cold....flight response (she didn't like my relatively cold hands, but did not see them as a threat).
