So, my new Coastal is making a popping sound when he breathes. It's not with every breath, and it may not be repeated for a few seconds. It's not a wheeze, More like a pop....fffffffft I am assuming, since he is close to shedding that it is probably dry skin in his nostril. Any other thoughts?

Thanks

Wait till he sheds and if he is still doing it after take him to the vet. It will most likely be a RI as thats how they can sound. Is there any puffing in the throat?

No, no other signs or symptoms. He is otherwise alert and active.

I would just wait til he sheds then, and if it continues take it to the vet as i think it will be RI.

Ensure your temps etc. are correct but chances are it is due to the shed cycle, Mark

Figured I ought to update this. He did finally shed, and the funky noise is gone. He seems to be back to normal. Thanks for your help all!

Thanks Rob, I was looking him over after his shed, and it mostly came off, but I noticed a few old scars, (I am assuming they are from mice:mad:) Where there are pieces of skin still attached, I've don the damp clothe routine and rubbed them with a finger afterwords, some came off some are still attached. Any ideas?

If you get it good and wet, just gentle rubbing will get it off eventually. Just be sure not to pull at him or pinch him. You can get "shed aid" stuff, I think it`s a bit of a gimmick really but for scars it may well be a good thing. I think it`s just Alovera gel. Short of that, try not to worry about it. As long as it`s not the tail tip or face it won`t cause problems really. As for rattling or popping sounds, how big is he? My huge Jungle Jaguar makes the odd noise here and there, especially when being handled. I was concerned at first obviously but I found a fair few examples amoung other keepers of similar noises in large Carpets. Worth a mentiion that if you`ve not heard of it before :) Can we see him please? :) Or have I Missed a thread?

Thanks Feebs, you're a Prince Mate! The noise went away after he shed I assume it was a skin flap in the nostril. He looks as if at one time the tip of his tail did not shed, as the end is a little pinched. But this shed found everything off except the spots around the scars. Which, I'll just continue to get them wet and rub lightly and hope the just slough off.

And you've already seen him in the Meet Vern Thread. You and Chuck identified him as a jag sibling.

I should of read your post a little better Greg oop's my bad. I would do as feebs has said but if your really wanting to get it off you could also try putting him in a wet pillow case and letting him do the work after you have soaked him. This works well and i have had to do it a few times myself.

I also have a scrubby in perfect health that gets a little whistle when she breaths if she ia very excited. I have had her checked a few times now and there is absolutely nothing wrong with her.
