Well my very pregnant Stimson's python had a surprise for me when I got back from visiting my parents last night. The ONE time I'm out of the house for a day and a half and couldn't check her twice in the day, she laid her eggs. I got home and she was in a nice tight beehive coil, but she'd destroyed her nestbox and laid right in the middle of the cage..lol. 5 good eggs and 1 most likely dead one that she wasn't coiling and is kind of mushy. I took the eggs and set them up in my incubator with the "dud" in its own cup to see if it can make it, but I'm not expecting it to. I'm expecting to have to pull it tonight or tomorrow. She was very well-mannered about us taking her eggs and didn't try to hiss or anything.
So now it's another 45-50 days of waiting and checking my incubator and hoping I can get the little ones to hatch ok. I was soo nervous when I saw the eggs last night- I had read and talked to people about what to do and then seeing them there, I was just like, "OMG, what do I do? Do I take them now, do I let her try? Gah!" lol. I am sure it will get routine eventually but oh man it was exciting and I'm so happy!!!

Thanks Wayne...I love the Happy Dance cat. I was totally doing a happy dance last night after the initial shock wore off. BTW, does anyone know if I should try to feed momma right away or give her a few days? She hasn't eaten since she got pregnant in late February, so it's been close to 3 months.

Marge is doing great. I gave her a f/t rat pup and although she's never taken rats for me before she snapped it right up. I opened the cage a few minutes later to check on her and she came popping out with mouth open, like, "More More FEEED ME!!!" So I gave her another one. She looked like she wanted more, but I don't want to stress her system too much so she has to digest these first. :)

I was very surprised that she ate right away too. It makes me feel better though, knowing she's come through a-ok and is back to eating and returning to good body weight. I'm going to try to not let her get quite as chubby though, since I think that may well have contributed to the low egg count. She's a real sweetie too, let me hold her last night to check her over gently. I really really like these little pythons- great snakes all around. And Maude looks as though she'll be getting ready to ovulate soon. *crosses fingers*

Maude is a Stimsons as well.
The possible dud molded and I removed it last night. A second egg, one that had looked good also started to show some spots where the shell looked like it was not right- I could see blood vessels and it looked a bit yellow. I put that one in its own cup and removed all the egg cup lids to increase air flow. My whole incubator maintains 78% humidity and they are desert snakes so I hope that will help....I just don't want to lose them all. :(
