Mind if I add some non snake reptiles?
1 Corns, 2 Blue Spotted Timor monitors, 3 Burmese pythons, 4 Red Tail Boas, 5 Amazon Tree Boas, 6 Bull Snakes. Hmm I like them all but I guess only these 6 meet the top of the list the rest are all about the same to me.

Me too.

Then if you broke each species down by sub species and color morph, my list would take 30 pages to get it all down.

I`m also lucky enough to own most of my list :) lol apart from a few my wife isn`t likely to let me have any time soon...

Gaboon Viper
Western Diamond Back Rattle Snake
Spectacle Cobra
"Common" Boa
Brazilian Rainbow Boa
Blood Python
Western Hognose
Malagasy Giant Hognose
Jungle Jaguar Carpet Python
Mangrove Snake

I love the Gaboon Viper, it`s just so incredibly beautiful in every way ! But even if I could persuade my wife to have one in the house, I don`t think I`ll ever be prepared to take the risk. I take enough risk with my Westerns and my Malagasy Hog, I have no idea what would happen if one of those guys landed a bite, I have to take a fair amount of meds every day and I don`t imagine they`d mix very well with Hognose venom. I can look though ! My local herp shop has real bruisers ! :)

More than likely, you'd be fine if you were bitten by a hognose. They are generally considered not to be dangerous to humans. There are those rare cases where a person happens to be allergic to the venom, but the majority of people have just a bit of swelling for a few days to a week. Also remember that a hognose would have to chew on you a bit to get any venom into you. A quick defensive strike would not envenomate you, as their fangs are too far back and the delivery mechanisms too poor for them to quickly envenomate. I was nipped by my FWC when he struck at a mouse I was tossing into his cage and missed. I was not envenomated, as he just got me for a split second and let go, but it did bleed like a sucker.

Feebo
02-11-10, 06:19 PM
Yeah I`ve read loads about those guys and thier venom. I only say that because I`m on morphine for a spinal injury, quite a lot of morphine, that may well mean complications if I ever get a decent bite, possibly making me one of the rare serious cases. Not that I ever intend to find out. The Malagasy Hog venom is worse than the Westerns, and they have a really decent gape aswell so I suppose that`s a little more dodgy than the Westerns for that reason. Although they aren`t as keen to bite as a Mangrove or something. How easy can it be to remove a chewing snake from your hand anyway?! lol I`ve spend twenty five minutes with a python attached to my hand before now, short of spraying it in the face there`s not much you can do really if you don`t want teeth left in you and an injured snake..... (I can`t use alcohol) Mind you, I`m sure i`d be just a little bit more motivated if I had a Western or malagasy Hog attached to my hand ! lol :)

Will0W783
02-12-10, 09:24 AM
Maybe- not sure how hognose venom and opiate narcotics would mix. I've never had a snake try chewing on me- they always let go rather quickly. Of course, I tend to jump, which startles them as much as the bite startles me, so they let go...lol.

Feebo
02-12-10, 02:12 PM
Me neither, worth extra caution that I think. Yeeeeah they do seem as startled as us sometimes don`t they ! lol Every time I`ve been bitten it`s either been feeding related or a new and scared snake. As long as I always exercise a little extra caution with those two species, I`m as safe as I can be (and still own rear fang venomous snakes) If I do ever get bitten I`m betting it`ll be the Malagasy Hog lol :D In all likelyhood, the worst that will happen is a nasty reaction and a trip to the ozzy, or I may just react like everyone else but as I say, I don`t intent to find out if I can help it. :)

Will0W783
02-12-10, 08:54 PM
Yeah, I hope to never be tagged again by the FWC- he is fast as heck and I really dont want to find out if I'm allergic.

Feebo
02-16-10, 04:01 PM
No.... I may well get a FWC one day, not just yet though I don`t think. I`ll never go any bigger than Boas and Carpets so one day I`ll probably want the extra challenge of a FWC :) Motorbike leathers and a riot shield then I think lol :D

They aren't bad. I can freehandle Rogue for the most part. I use a hook to get him out and then once he's out he's fine. He's never tried to bite in defense. The only bite was an accident as I didn't throw the mouse in fast enough. I hate using tongs on the tails of live mice because I know it hurts them, but from now on, tongs it is for the one that gets thrown to Rogue. He absolutely refuses f/t, but I'm still trying.

Same as anything else, hook em into a damp pillowcase and let em crawl around for a couple of hours. Clear plastic tubing is your friend if you have to do maintenance on them. Funny how snakes can't resist crawling into a tight space :)
