I have heard that corn snakes are often active in the evening. When exactly are captive corn snakes most active? Will they crawl around and do interesting things when the room lights are on? I am wondering because pet shop corn snakes seem to be asleep whenever I look at them, and I prefer pets that move. I was hoping to get garter snakes but they seem to be really hard to obtain legally in Canada so I'm considering alternatives.

The corns I've had experience with have been extremely active. Mostly during the day, seeing as cornsnakes are diurnal reptiles.

Due to it being a pet shop, with contact (i'm sure) with many other animals, it may be ill. Your best bet would probably be contacting a breeder. But corn snakes are excellent, do some more research on them and I'm sure you'll agree!

Yeah I have to agree....though I have say my corns are much more active early morning and early evening before the lights actually go out.

definitely a Diurnal snake though.

Yeh, I agree, cornsnakes are diurnal snakes and mine are early morning and evening movers. Please don't go by anything you see in pet stores. And don't buy from them. I don't support the stores for a couple of reasons: You never know if you're getting a healthy snake, a wild caught or captive bred, and most of the time the stores have no clue how to care for reptiles at all. With a reputable breeder you get backing by the breeder, a good resource for information, and a good healthy pet. Corns are awesome and the variety in the colors is amazing. I think you will enjoy them.

I wasn't actually considering buying that particular individual. The petstore workers in that store are rather clueless when it comes to reptiles. They are better with fish and plants. I am glad to hear that cornsnakes are usually active during during the day, most of the care sheets I've seen state that they are nocturnal, or active at dawn and dusk. Perhaps their natural behaviour has changed in the generations they've been in captivity? I know some tropical catfish species do that, partly because their owners tend to feed them during the day. I'm planning to do any reptile buying after I move to Vancouver. I'm currently in a smallish town with very little in the way of available reptiles, reptile equipment or knowledge. Cornsnakes do sound very nice, and they are gorgeous.
Thanks for your help.

My corn snake stays hidden during the day. And most other people that have corn snakes that I have talked to say their snake is mostly active during the night. If you want something that you will see a lot of, I would not recommend a corn snake.

I think you may be in the minority there man, I've got 6 corns over here and they are always out cruising in the daytime.

I have a corn and he comes out in the early evening, but still is out during the day off an on. My kingsnake on the other hand is always cruzin thing never stops always looking for a way to bust out of jail. And well my Ball Pythons sleep like champs come out at night, but not always, usually just stick there heads out right now. Let us know what you get and post pictures when you do, would love to see the new guy/gal.
