View Full Version : Red tails
Hi i currently own a ball python and have been looking for an ew snake foe a month or so now. I posted a few days ago asking everyone what would be a good seconed snake to own. Many people chose red tails over all else. I am wondering if anyone knows of good deals for one.
Thank u in advance for helping me aquire a new family member.:mednormal

First try your local herp society/association they almost always have surrendered animals free or very cheap(mine has a $1 a ticket raffle at the meetings). If nothing you like there try kingsnake.com's classified section or reptileauctions.com. Both those places have great animals at below retail values, sometimes insanely cheap(I got an african rock python for $15)!

yeah your #1 choice should be to get one from some type of herp rescue or organization. if you cant find any of those then i think your 2nd choice should be to get one from a local herp expo. there are probably a couple shows within a reasonable driving distance from you. i like this way because the animals are usually well below "pet store" prices and you can talk to the breeder in person and ask any questions you may have. and then if all else fails i think your 3rd choice would be getting one online. there are hundreds of boa breeders out there and you can usually get baby common boas for like $50-$65 plus shipping, sometimes even cheaper. good luck with whatever you choose to do:)

Ah buying "used" snakes specially rescue snakes is like buying used cars they usually come with problems. Unless you have the experience dealing with health issues etc, I would recomend getting a snake from a breeder & preferably a baby so you can raise it up properly from the beginning, Mark

Mark makes a very good point there and thats something i didnt think about. so i agree, you should get one from a breeder, either at a herp expo or online.

Quitter! J/k, but I'm still going herp society as they really need you to give a loving home to these rescues. Sometimes they do have problems, true, but being a great resource that works with these animals often, they should be willing to tell you if there's anything wrong and be able to help you out. Most animals I've seen at my herp association were perfectly normal animals that were either where they werent supposed to be, or underfed animals people couldn't take care of. Not much work there and it helps save the little creatures. Breeders can always find a new customer but your herp organization can't necessarily find permanent families for all it's poor homeless redtails :.(
Thanks to everyone who offered their poinion to me. I totally forgot about rescues since I am becoming a member with the IRCF( International Reptile Conservation Foundation) If anyone would like to support us please send me an email so i can give u info on how to help. Thanks again.

In reguards to rescues they are definitely worth checking out, but be sure to know what you are getting into & make sure you are prepared to deal with it. Not trying to stear folks right away from them, but we all know rescue animals specially boas can come with lots of issues that not everyone is set up to handle. Example only eats live degus etc. or health issues requiring medical attn, Mark
